Spoons | Old Emotions | Talkback | Sparks | 1983 | Spoons was formed in Burlington, Ontario, in 1979. The entire band were influenced by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark who inspired a greater keyboard presence in the Spoons sound. Gary Numan, Talking Heads, Simple Minds, and John Foxx's Ultravox were also influential on the band's musical evolution. This album was produced by none other than Nile Rodgers. While absolutely a world class band, Spoons failed to get adequate distro outside of Canada...so they remain one of Canada's best kept secrets...but those who know...know! | 0:02:19 (Pop-up)
Siouxsie & The Banshees | This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us | Through The Looking Glass | Polydor | 1987 | For their eighth studio album, Siouxsie et co. decided to focus on covers, mostly from the early 70's. This was considered a nod to Bowie's "Pinups" album. Siouxsie's take on Sparks "This Town" becomes a primal stomp of sexual frustration with a bit of added darkness and cheek. | 0:06:02 (Pop-up)
M + M | Black Stations/White Stations | Mystery Walk | RCA | 1984 | On this album, Martha & The Muffins shortened their name to M + M. They had emerged from the early punk/new wave/art pop scene in 1977 which was centered around various clubs along Toronto's Queen Street West and the Ontario College of Art, where several members of the band were students. The band was signed by Virgin Records UK and recorded their first album, Metro Music at The Manor near Oxford, England in 1979. After Echo Beach became a top ten single around the world in 1980 MatM toured extensively in Britain, Europe and North America. In 1983, lead vocalist Martha Johnson and guitarist Mark Gane pared the band down to a duo and briefly changed the name to M+M. Combining sonic textures and art funk in their dance single Black Stations/White Stations, the song reached 2 in Billboard's Dance Chart in 1984. This song borrows heavily from Eno/Talking Heads but oh, to such great effect! | 0:09:10 (Pop-up)
Blue Peter | Don't Walk Past | Falling | Ready Records | 1983 | You could not escape this song on the Canadian airwaves during the 80's and why would you want to. Chilly new wave disaffection and an urgent, sultry baritone melody served up by Paul Humphrey, student of both Bowie and Brian Ferry. Paired with a most stylish video, this song remains a gem of the New Wave era anda a Canadian treasure. | 0:14:11 (Pop-up)

The show tells the story of Commander Cliff Allister McLane (Dietmar Schönherr), an Earth starship captain and his loyal crew. He is Orion's commander in the developing war against an alien race called the Frogs (so-called also in the German original). He is notoriously defiant towards his superiors. Fans of Pulp may also recognize this sample as the basis of their supersexy song "This Is Hardcore".... |

Vanessa Worm | Promised Land | Mosaics | Vanessa Worm | 2023 | New Zealand's Vanessa Worm new release Mosaics' follows in the lineage of music made at the nexus of punk and dance music that recalls the storied tradition of labels like ZE Records and DFA Records. On Mosaics, however, Worm presents a distinctly Antipodean take on the peculiar immediacy of no wave's more danceable characteristics, creating a sound that is both familiar and entirely its own... | * | 0:26:15 (Pop-up) |
Chronophage | Abzurdity | Th'pig'kiss'd Album | Self Released | 2020 | Chronophage began five years ago in Austin, Texas. Stout participants in the transgressive DIY punk community patchworked throughout the world, the band have released two LPs and a handful of cassettes, always demonstrating a kind of risk-taking that feels both gleeful and dire. It’s clear that they delight in making hard, unexpected decisions, but there’s a colder sense that their existence depends on this daring. | 0:29:48 (Pop-up)
Dumb | Dropout | Pray 4 Tomorrow | Mint Records | 2022 | Guitarist and lead vocalist Franco Rossino of Vancouver's DUMB stares down the Sisyphean task of attempting to make art and live decently while crushed under the heel of corporate greed and broad systemic failure. Despite a coy lyrical slipperiness, Dumb make disaffection and apathy sound purposeful and subversive, in part due to smart iterations on their core sound and a reinvigorated sonic palette that embraces boldness and warmth. | 0:31:32 (Pop-up)
Soft On Crime | Mess On Hold | New Suite | 2023 | Dublin's Soft On Crime combine the melodic sensibilities of vintage powerpop with the fuzz tectonics and furious pounding of the classic 80s strum and thrum era, there are hints here of the Soft Boys, Feelies, Vic Godard, Hüsker Dü and more...Rehearsed in a damp basement, recorded in a converted swimming pool, continued in the band members’ homes, and finished in a clandestine fifteen-minute visit to the music department of a nearby college, New Suite has had a long and occasionally complex gestation.... | 0:33:10 (Pop-up)
The Drin | Venom | Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom | Feel It Records | 2023 | 'Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom' is the Drin's finest hour as a creative entity. McCartney's incredible command of rhythm lies at the forefront of the mix, complimented by a group that is able to seamlessly transport between post-punk, acid guitar jangle, and krautish experimentalism. There's even a stellar dub track on here. As much as contemporary artists tend to flaunt their affinity for the past - it's entirely worthless to apply such trappings to the Drin. Their genre-expansive abilities and deep knack for rhythm and layering are something entirely new and futuristic. Ohio has never sounded so close to outer space. | * | 0:35:00 (Pop-up) |
Delivery | Floored | Yes We Do EP | Spoilsport Records | 2021 | Hailing from Melbourne, Delivery fuse herky-jerky rhythms with scratchy guitars, sweeping beats and buzzing synths, the quintet's tight as hell soundscapes embrace an off-kilter home-recording style that differs from their signature live sound. Originally a duo, they are now a 5 piece of awesomeness. | 0:37:00 (Pop-up)
Self Improvement | Fear & Power | Visible Damage | sel released | 2021 | They wanted to sound like Spits...but it came out more Suburban Lawns. “Long Beach punks released this arty, quirky, post-punk album just before the end of 2021 and it slays. Really nicely recorded angular guitar rock with some wild studio tricks throughout the record. Right in the front of the mix, the vocals shift from a sterile A.I. narrator to a crass cockney squack. Tons of great riffing. For lovers of Dry Cleaning and Sweeping Promises. Check it out. For fans of a hyper-magnetic chimney sweep with metal nipples. This band is amazing. | 0:39:28 (Pop-up)
Freak Genes | Strange Charm | Hologram | Feel It | 2022 | Is it Jay Reatard? No it's not. It's UK's Freak Genes! Charlie Murphy (Internal Credit / Isolation) and Andrew Anderson (Proto Idiot / KAKE?) orchestrate affairs, wrangling synths, drum machines, guitars and found sounds. Think 154-era Wire but with a reduced budget, or DAF minus the disco. | 0:41:53 (Pop-up)
Why Bother? | Laughing at What I Forgot | Lacerated Nights | Feel It Records | 2022 | Iowa's Why Bother? is Terry on vocals + synth, Speck on guitar, Pamela on bass, and Paul on drums. Their sound takes the classic Midwestern punk approach of The Zero Boys and Toxic Reasons, adding in warm layers of synth and sci-fi thematics ala The Spits and darker post-punk moments in the vein of early Joy Division. Yet there's so much more to this band that defies comparison, for WHY BOTHER? are truly a singular experience. | 0:43:36 (Pop-up)
Green/Blue | Paper Thin | Paper Thin | Feel It Records | 2022 | Green/Blue hail from Minneapolis. "I think my goal, in a weird way, was to do my best work in my 40s," said frontman Jim Blaha of Green/Blue. "To tap into how much I love music...try to tap into it like when you're a teenager and you're like 'I can't not have it.'" Despite being named one of the best new bands in Minneapolis last year, Green/Blue comprise scene veterans. Morena Leraba | Meritlhoana | Fela Sa Ha Mojela EP | The Good Times Co | 2023 | Released Feb 3. "‘Fela sa Ha Mojela' is a 5-song EP by Morena Leraba, their first-ever release as a band after a series of collaborations and performances across the globe — meaning “song or poem of Ha Mojela” (in Sesotho language), these are some of the songs and ideas the band has been performing and developing throughout their 5-6 years in the scene. //// Musicians (Band): Thamsanqa Ngwenya: Marimba and backing vocals | Steve Hogg: Producer and Synthesizers | Molefi Makananise: Bass | Bronwen Clacherty: Percussions and Uhadi | Teboho Mochaoa (alias: Morena Leraba): Lead vocals." ----- "Morena Leraba is a Mosotho musician and shepherd from Ha-Mojela in Mafeteng district, located south of Lesotho's capital Maseru. Leraba’s music (especially lyrics) is deeply rooted in Lesotho's traditional music, poetry, and its sub-genre, Famo, which was introduced as early as the 1920s when Basotho men were migrant workers in South African mines. However, the approach in the beat is significantly different as it hurls almost everything from Electro, Electronica, Afro-House, Folk, and Hip-Hop. Leraba made his first appearance on the international scene in 2014 when he was featured in a song "Do You Know Know Lesotho" by a Cape Town/German band, The Freerangers" //// "Meritlhoana are foot or ankle rattlers (or shakers) worn mainly by traditional healers or musicians during ceremonies (Hlophe) and other special events and the song is about a spiritual calling. The words of the song, or chorus, are inspired by a song I heard when I was young — a group of traditional healers. Sangomas (or Mathuela in Sesotho) and their trainers singing in my village of Matholeng, in Mafeteng (south-west of Lesotho). Meritlhoana tells the story of a character who has a spiritual calling (ho thoasa in Sesotho) with the message coming through a series of dreams. In these dreams, the character is aware he needs to find answers but he’s confused as some messages are not clear. Eventually, while he’s shrouded in confusion and uncertainty, he hears a voice: “this is a gift, and it is for you”, and, afterwards, everything is clear. The song also draws inspiration from seeing multidisciplinary artist Buhlebezwe Siwane’s exhibition at Hiddingh Campus in Cape Town. Through the works of many young contemporary South African artists, one realises how apartheid (and Colonialism) has robbed the colonised of so much in present-day South Africa, including their spirituality. Colonial laws and churches demonised “Ubungoma” (or the practice of being a Sangoma) and healers, herbalists and many had to practise in secrecy. Africans’ connection to spirituality was classified as witchcraft and ungodly." Meritlhoana by Morena Leraba (Bandcamp) | * | 0:58:08 (Pop-up) |
dEUS | How To Replace It | How To Replace It | PIAS | 2023 | Released Feb 17, first album in 10 years for this Belgian group. "Formed in 1991, dEUS began their career as a covers band, but soon began writing their own material. Their musical influences range from folk and punk to jazz and progressive rock. They first came to attention in Humo's Rock Rally of 1992, and after the release of the four-track EP "Zea", they were offered a recording contract with Island Records. They became the first Belgian indie act ever to sign to a major international label." | * | 1:05:19 (Pop-up) |
Einstürzende Neubauten | Seven Screws | Alles In Allem | Potomak | 2020 | "When Blixa Bargeld was asked if he wanted to perform at the Moon Club on April 1, 1980, he thought up the band EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, accepted the gig and called a few friends. The initial members of the band turned out to be musicians who happened to have time that evening. The official birth of EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN is generally linked to this concert. Certainly, no one could have dared to predict back then that the band would continue to be so highly productive, and still be going strong after almost four decades." This song from the album of their 40th anniversary, "All Is All", band lineup at this time: Alexander Hacke, Blixa Bargeld, Jochen Arbeit, N. U. Unruh, Rudolph Moser. You can find out about all things Neubauten at their website, including how they are about to make a new album and eager for your support: Einstürzende Neubauten (Official Web) | 1:10:57 (Pop-up)
Arab Strap | Haunt Me | The Red Thread | Chemikal Underground | 2001 | I love the string sample in this, and how the track unwinds, melts and swirls into chaos at the end. How can you not? "Vocalist and drummer Aidan Moffat and multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton grew up in Falkirk, Scotland, and bonded over their mutual love for Drag City recording artists such as Will Oldham (who at the time recorded under the name Palace Brothers) and Smog. They began collaborating in 1995, and their debut album, The Week Never Starts Round Here, was released the following year. At this point Gary Miller and David Gow joined the band and became the rhythm section, creating a more dynamic live experience when the band started touring. //// Over the course of their ten-year existence Arab Strap worked with numerous musicians, including Jenny Reeve and Stacey Sievewright, as well as Adele Bethel, who went on to form Sons and Daughters. Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian featured on the album Philophobia, but the Belle & Sebastian album/song "The Boy with the Arab Strap" would later create something of a feud between Moffat and Murdoch. //// Arab Strap's marked characteristics include sordid, personal, yet honest, lyrics – described by the NME as "fly on the duvet vignettes". Like fellow Scottish band The Proclaimers, their lyrics are sung in their native Scots tongue. At first essentially an electro-acoustic band with a brooding, spare sound, later albums and gigs saw them develop a fuller sound that drew deeply on both indie and dance music." | 1:16:27 (Pop-up)

John Dwyer, Ryan Sawyer, Andres Renteria | Bricked Rune | Posh Swat | Rock Is Hell | 2023 | "For a few years now, OSEES leader John Dwyer has been spearheading one-off projects from various configurations of musicians under various band names. These psychedelic explorations — which include the likes of Gong Splat, Bent Arcana, Moon-Drenched, Witch Egg, and Endless Garbage — have mostly erred on the jammy, jazzy, proggy, krautrock-y side rather than the tight garage-punk Dwyer usually kicks out with the OSEES. Essentially he’s spent the early 2020s exploring experimental instrumental music with a talented circle of pals. //////// The latest of these outings is POSH SWAT, a percussion-led improv project that teams Dwyer with Gong Splat bandmates Ryan Sawyer and Andres Renteria. //////// A statement from the band: Trap kit, hand percussion, homemade percussion instruments and electronic percussion overflow with extra weirdness. Sick pop rhythms grinding through the wasteland. Sand in your hair and bugs in your teeth. Hand on your knife, knife in your sheath Grimy bass burps through a fried stack And the crack of the snare is a mighty pink smack Bells, whistles, conga, and vibes This is a drug record One thousand times" | * | 1:26:37 (Pop-up) |
