@Irwin: That's what I mean when I say "jazz weather" - and there's been a lot of it on Wednesdays, your show is in sync!
Incidentally, GLAD to start off on L.M. again! Different cut from The Sidewinder, but still that legendary album.

i don't remember at all what astral weeks sounds like. i must've heard it as i was already realizing how very limited he was/is as a vocalist -interesting at times and seemingly genuinely soulful for fleeting moments, a long, long, long time ago... but limited.
so my assessment may've been unfair, as it did come along soon after his excellent work with Them, and directly before one of his extremely few excellent albums, moondance.
so, as i did not find my copy in my mess here, i'm excited to hear it now.

I would say that it's very "un-standard", unique is a word often used to praise art, but for those who listen to jazz or soul, this definitely isn't on the same page as what is normally considered jazz or soul. Actually it's more "psychedelic" in many ways, an observation about this album I previously didn't notice.

but i liked "sweet thing". this song i liked and now he's gradually wrecking it, sadly. it's a good song; some actual composition, not just the 2-chord backdrop he does so much. but i'd like it more if he just sang, without the acrobatics.

"For one thing, what it means is Richard Davis's bass playing, which complements the songs and signing all the way with a lyricism that's something more than inspired, something that has been touched, that's in the realm of the miraculous. The whole ensemble – Larry Fallon's string section, Jay Berliner's guitar (he played on Mingus' BLACK SAINT AND THE SINNER LADY), Connie Kay's drumming – is like that: they and Van sound like they're not just reading but dwelling inside of each other's minds."

I do admit as a fan, that "Slim Slow Slider" is a disappointing ending to this album. Some have written that it finishes the character arc and expresses his disappointment, but Pet Sounds finished with "Caroline No" - sad and disappointing sentiment but SO BEAUTIFUL in every way. And the strange album ending with the trains and dogs! Perhaps another track, or an extension of this track might make the ending I want to the rest of this album.

I like the testifyin' and beltin' on this album - I did notice some points where he kind of diverges into...Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" voice maybe? I like those parts less, but overall enjoy the music, lyrics and presentation.

Eventually, after repeated campaigns, the Franks conquered the Avars. The Avar land was surrounded by fortifications. When the Carolingians liberated the spoils, they didn't hoard it, they distributed it among their cronies, and although you'd think this would result only in a transfer of wealth to their crown, it eventually caused a diffusion of all that money -- and an economic boom throughout Europe! This period was so important in Europe's history that it was retold allegorically as the Niebelung's song.
Oh, the innermost of the Avar fortresses? It was called...the Ring.

Songs like this from Another World are paradoxically extra fresh to me because of the way I initially rejected the records not produced by Fripp — so, less listening more fresh.
The sound still sucks compared to the Fripp records, but Roches is better than not-Roches!
