Favoriting Mid-Valley Mutations with Austin Rich: Playlist from February 21, 2023 Favoriting

austinrich's avatar View austinrich's profile Favoriting

A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

The large often discount the small. Having the ability to squash the average housefly, mankind had seen them as nothing more than a common nuisance. So when the time of the Cataclysm had come, when the beasts of the fields and jungles and the Savannah had begun to change in ways that had nothing to do with evolution, the insects were largely ignored.

↳ Song: "Carseat Collapse Recall" by "Dead Air Fresheners"
Full Disclosure: I played with / in the Dead Air Fresheners on a number of occasions, a few times delivering lyrics and stories over their music. I appear on a few of their recordings, but largely, Dead Air Fresheners are anonymous, and perform masked. These days, one of the members has recruited his children, who perform with the band, on various instruments. I haven't performed with them in years, but they were a big part of me getting back to performing in front of crowds again.

I agree. My folks are both from the same small town and there was a lot of hand wringing over what people would think when, e.g., I started wearing all black. My thought was "who cares?" But that didn't go over well.

In small isolated towns, like the one I grew up in , it seems like people create false narratives about others, and become suspicious and paranoid, because there's so little else to do, other than working on your truck or having a bake-sale or something

Well, Black was a standard fashion color for decades and decades, because it looked find dirty and was easy to make stuff for the whole family in that color. Fancy colored fabrics are really an Industrial Revolution innovation.

There were other colors of fabric pre-industrial revolution. but they were costly.

Divine Circles is a one-person act, playing a Cello with a looping pedal. They use loops and samples to create layered performances, and it is BEAUTIFUL to watch and listen to. I got to engineer their sound once for a radio gig, and it was fantastic. They gave me this CD, and I don't think you can find this recording elsewhere.
