	🥁 4:13pm Discotech Underground: ↳ Beantown Doug @4:07 Capitol notoriously chopped up Beatles LP for US release, using single, UK LP and EP tracks to fill out enough space to make an album. The thing is, they ended up being how American fans remember them to the point where the UK releases just don't flow the same way we are used to them flowing.
	🥁 4:13pm Beantown Doug: British cosmetic companies like Miners advertised in movie theatres (British spelling). The commercials Pattie Boyd was in were shown in theatres.
	🥁 4:14pm WLSClark: ↳ Discotech Underground @4:13 But 2nd Lp was pretty cheesy compared to most. Weird photo cover and then that added stuff on "Thank You Girl" and DUOPHONIC was horrible.

The Stones, Who and Yardbirds albums all had that done to them and they sounded just atrocious. That's why the monos are SO much better

	4:28pm coelacanth∅: yeh, mine might be a boot -bought way after the fact. 2 friends had copies bought at different times in different places that had big bumps all over the vinyl. they played though but sounded like crap.

	4:38pm coelacanth∅: by the time i was ~12 i'd heard so much about how amazing revolver was so i saved up got a copy. i thought it mostly sucked! i didn't know the difference...3 of my favorite beatles songs omitted from the us version!

In the UK version even the lack of the false start on "I'm Looking Through You" always sounds wrong to me. For all of his other sins, Dave Dexter, Jr. deserves credit for the American Rubber Soul, which was the version that inspired Brian Wilson to produce Pet Sounds.

	4:49pm coelacanth∅: and regarding revolver, it has several of my most favorite songs on it, but also has some of my least-favorite beatles songs. - but i never tried to choose a favorite anyway! i once thought it was the white album. i once thought it was abbey rd (which it's definitely not now) ii once thought it was rubber soul.
	🥁 4:49pm Discotech Underground: ↳ doctorjazz @4:48 Yes, mostly. British record buyers didn't like singles on albums because it felt to them like they were buying the same thing twice. In America, singles were what helped the albums sell and were considered essential.

	🥁 4:51pm Discotech Underground: The British Revolver is superior to the American because of the inclusion of the omitted tracks, which oddly enough appeared in America BEFORE the Revolver album was released in the UK.

Young British record buyers were not as financially well heeled as American teenagers so they had to be frugal and get the most for their money. Buying tracks they already had was a turn off for them.

	5:27pm timinoak: the wfmu iOS app is so great. so well designed. I use it a bunch. You can access the archives too, then click play (not download), and it downloads. I'll pack up an archive before heading out to a cell free area. then I just use airpods for listening. And I often stream live wfm to the phone, and it's super reliable.

My hilarious revelation this week was that Howard Stern was at WCCC in Connecticut, 25 miles south of where I was in Massachusetts. Our net pay was almost exactly the same -- $110/week. He quit around the same time I did, and for the same reason -- being denied a $25/week raise, but I changed careers. dograt.com...

	6:23pm Rich in Washington: The music biz sure was something in this era. So many great bands on big labels and labels seemed eager (compared to ensuing years, at least) to take chances on interesting acts. That Indy/college rock/pre-Grunge era.

	6:32pm Rich in Washington: Even though it's mainly centered around Grunge, the documentary Hype is worth watching as it tells the tale really well how big labels and the press can completely squash a music scene/movement and destroy its cultural ecosystem.

Things like Bandcamp make it possible for people to record and market their music themselves without having to get raped by a record company.

Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

	6:23pm Rich in Washington: The music biz sure was something in this era. So many great bands on big labels and labels seemed eager (compared to ensuing years, at least) to take chances on interesting acts. That Indy/college rock/pre-Grunge era.
