Deerhoof  Love-Lore 2 (Knight Rider/Raymond Scott/Mauricio Kagel/Eddie Grant/Gary Numan)   Favoriting Love-Lore  Joyful Noise  2020  With this EP, Deerhoof has created their own living encyclopedia of experimental music. Over five tracks, the group wildly fluctuates through bizarrely intricate medleys that include snippets from television theme songs, experimental composers, and pop music spanning generations. Within parentheses on each track name, the group lists every quoted artist, composer, and author whose work appears in the track. Interspersed and paced by meditative cadenzas and noisy interludes, Deerhoof takes plenty of liberties with sonic texture and reveals the extent of their obsession with recorded sounds of all kinds. This record, like all Deerhoof releases is absolutely DELIGHTFUL.    0:02:20 (Pop-up)
Pylon  Yo-Yo   Favoriting Chomp  DB Records  1983  Pylon. The bizarre mish mash of club rock pop. The band that R.E.M. considered the greatest rock band in America. The band that absolutely fucking nobody has heard of. With Chomp, their second release what at first seems to be a simple, spare, caustic and ironic sound unfolds with repeated listenings into a cryptic, committed and entirely musical experience. For such a small band, Pylon creates an elaborate geometry of angular melodies, emotionally sonic relationships and Morse-code stories worthy of Raymond Carver or an evolved punk, post-modernist haiku halucinator.    0:05:48 (Pop-up)
Kilynn Lunsford  Reality Testing   Favoriting Custodians Of Human Succession  Ever/Never  2022  Lunsford is from Philadelphia. She was previously a member of noise-punk outfit Taiwan Housing Project. She is a health care workers’ organizer and she’s immune compromised. That strange, frightening, unhealthy, early-COVID vibe runs all through this unsettling disc, where the air might be killing you and you might be dead in a week even though you feel fine right now. It’s a woozy, ominous world that Lunsford bumps and bops and chants through, but one well worth visiting.    0:09:54 (Pop-up)
LIFE  Almost Home   Favoriting North East Coastal Town  The Liquid Label  2022  LIFE are anchored by their hometown Hull; the geography, history and community has always been the inspiration behind their creativity. Their most recent album North East Coastal Town is a love letter to the city. The album is an ode to kinship and relationship with its musical and lyrical spine picking out themes of love, desire, beauty, horror, chaos, pride and most importantly the sense of belonging.    0:12:34 (Pop-up)
Bad Breeding  Whose Cause?   Favoriting Exiled  One Little Independent  2019  Bad Breeding are from Stevenage UK. Vitriolic, seething hardcore-meets-math-rock via Mike Watt basslines played by fresh-faced guys who looked as if they’d be more at home serving lattes in a quiet bar than the sheer fury that emanated from the stage. That is, and was the beauty of Bad Breeding; they look like mild-mannered, thoughtful blokes (and I’m sure they are) but their music is as uncompromising and as savage as anything you’ve heard before. The lyrics speak for themselves; police brutality, politicians in glass houses, life in sterile small towns where after-pub violence is a weekend pursuit, poverty and discrimination and institutional racism. Bad Breeding aren’t offering solutions but they are reflecting their (and our) world through a prism of sheer, unadulterated fury.    0:15:31 (Pop-up)
ARSE/Party Dozen  Shit Future   Favoriting Power Tripper  Grupo Records  2018  Two of Sydney's most feral acts collide on 'Power Tripper’, the split 7-inch from ARSE and Party Dozen. A sonic partnering of saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and percussionist Jonathan Boulet, Party Dozen is a project loosely based around improvisation. Sydney's ARSE is a band built for the times. Their genre-blasting take on punk rock nails the modern condition in a way that’s universal yet undeniably Australian all at once, combining acerbic wit with live-wire guitars and motorik rhythms.    0:17:08 (Pop-up)

1979/1980

On NYE, 1979/1980, "Dove" (AKA Devo) ended their concert(s) by unveiling a song that would point the way to their sound for the decade to come. As evidenced by 1980's, "Freedom Of Choice" would dial down the weirdness & up the pop-minded content. Devo, "Gates Of Steel" ----- "Devo- Live At The Long Beach Arena 1979/12/31"

Devo  Gates Of Steel   Favoriting Freedom Of Choice  Warner Brothers / Virgin  1980  "Freedom of Choice is the third studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in May 1980 on the Warner Bros. label. The album contained their biggest hit, "Whip It"... //////// "Freedom of Choice was recorded between October 1979 and early 1980, at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. The album saw the band moving in more of an overt synthpop direction, even though guitars still played a prominent role. //////// The album was co-produced by Robert Margouleff, notable for his synthesizer work in Tonto's Expanding Head Band and with Stevie Wonder."    0:30:09 (Pop-up)
Italia 90  Tales From Beyond   Favoriting Living Human Treasure  Brace Yourself  2023  New album Releases January 20, 2023 "This set of abrasive & brutal post-punk has a melodic core that demonstrates Italia 90’s versatility & vitality. across the album, tracks from the band’s earliest days (‘new factory, competition‘) sit side by side with newer tracks, in a breadth of new styles for the band (who were originally from Brighton), creating something fresh & fantastic with the abundance of ingredients. "we consciously drew on elements from other genres, like new wave, goth rock, post-hardcore, jazz, jungle and ranchera that have inspired us but which we hadn't incorporated into our music previously”. The London based 4-piece have released a number of singles and eps since their breakthrough and have steadily built a cult following in England and mainland Europe." //////// "I care deeply about the things that I’m singing about,” says singer, Les Miserable, “but I don’t think that it needs to be me that is saying it. I have my point of view, and think that the ideology that I’m forwarding in the songs is correct, and very important, but it’s not important that it’s me saying them. if I did, I would already be contradicting the things that I am saying in the songs.” Italia 90 (Bandcamp)    0:33:55 (Pop-up)
The Umlauts  Boiler Suits & Combat Boots   Favoriting Ü EP  PRAH  2021  "How refreshing amidst the backdrop of the current populist political climate to have a band like The Umlauts. Formed after meeting together at Wimbledon College of Art, but with two of their four members hailing from mainland Europe, their debut EP ‘Ü’ is a record characterised by cross-border perspectives both stylistically and thematically. The genesis of The Umlauts resides in Stroud, where the group’s song writing duo Alfred Lear and Oliver Offord grew up and started writing together in the Gloucestershire town’s SVA Artspace. Treating the space as something of a refuge in which they could experiment, the pair delved deep into synthesisers and record collections alike, drawn to The Fall and other first generational post-punks like X-Ray Spex, as well as the likes of Bjork and The Knife. It's at art college in London and the addition of lyricists and vocalists Annabelle Mödlinger and Maria Vittoria Faldini that’s crystallised them as a band. Their debut EP is a tightly hewn mix of mechanical synth-pop, spiky no wave and bristling post-punk, with Mödlinger and Faldini’s multilingual lyrics giving it a razor-sharp focus. Much of the EP was completed at the PRAH studios in Margate, after initially beginning to come together over Lear and Offord’s kitchen table in Peckham, and the excitement of those overnight sessions – of four people finding themselves creatively – is evident, not least on the fuzzy subs and disorientating melodic sways of final track Remedy Song. That The Umlauts formed and operate in the shadow of the UK leaving Europe isn’t something a trans-European group have been able to shy away from, but it’s also why they come across as a much-needed antidote. They’re a brilliantly idiosyncratic reminder of the benefits that a melting pot of cultures and cross-border perspectives can result in. Released June 11, 2021" The Umlauts (Bandcamp)    0:37:18 (Pop-up)

For Cat

Pony Canyon

1996

For Meep Moop. A compilation on Japan's Pony Canyon, the only English text being "For CAT"... All-caps on CAT. Boldly printed at the bottom of the cover art, which, appropriately features a kitten smiling, eyes closed, looking very very pleased with its lot in life. My curiosity could not would never have been satisfied... I would have to know what sort of things were "for CAT"... So we are going to enjoy some of that, tonight, under the voice.

Nu Jazz  Flow   Favoriting Nu Jazz single  Nu Jazz  2022  NYC’s most transgressive and mysterious supergroup, Nu Jazz, synthesizes a decade plus of five unique, yet naturally interconnected musical journeys. The artists constituting the collective “Nu Jazz” have performed with their respective groups such as Deli Girls, Murderpact, CGI Jesus, Beshken, the Trap Music Orchestra, and The Beak Trio.    0:52:32 (Pop-up)
Marxist Love Disco Ensemble  Material   Favoriting MLDE  Mr Bongo  2022  Merging disco, 80s pop, and boogie into the fold, the group seeks to eradicate both the trite from disco and the sobriety from political music. Half poetic, half tongue-in-cheek, they are influenced by Eastern European and Mediterranean '70s disco records. Marxist Love Disco Ensemble was formed by percussionist Paolo Volkov in Bologna with a number of Italian, Slovenian and Croatian jazz musicians. It was recorded at a makeshift studio in Ljubljana with the group spending a two week period living together, improvising and transcribing the jams into something more coherent.    0:55:45 (Pop-up)
Iggy Pop  Comments   Favoriting EVERY LOSER  Gold Tooth/Atlantic  2023  Iggy Pop’s latest album, ‘Every Loser’ takes its name from the track ‘Comments’ where the Godfather of Punk rattles out, “Every loser needs a bit of joy”. The song weighs in on online the machismo of online trolls and how good Pop assumes they feel when they get to call him a “wimp” in the comments. It’s one of the many moments in ‘Every Loser’ that see the 75-year-old musician looking at the modern world through a wise and cheeky punk filter. See, Jim Osterberg has seen and lived it all, and he’s ready to talk about it so long as you’re willing to hear it in the loudest, most riotous way possible.  *   0:59:45 (Pop-up)
The Drin  Stonewallin'   Favoriting Stonewallin' Single  Feel It  2023  The past few years have seen The Drin emerge as true innovators of Midwestern punk, blurring all sub-genre lines and instead creating in their own dark world. Over the course of their first two albums, the Cincinnati band has proven capable of subverting senses, blending together everything from synth punk and krautrock to icy psych and mechanized gothic lo-fi, all filtered through the basement walls with a wavering energy. The more time you spend listening to The Drin, the deeper the connection becomes, the better the pieces all fit. The band keep that exploratory momentum moving with their upcoming third album in as many years, Today My Friend You Drunk The Venom, a record that feels pulled from another dimension, surreal and augmented from this existence. Due out January 27th via Feel It Records, Drunken Sailor Records, and Future Shock, the band expand on what’s come before, continuing to push further into their captivating unpredictability.  *   1:03:43 (Pop-up)
Model/Actriz  Mosquito   Favoriting Mosquito Single  True Panther  2022  Model/Actriz’s unsettlingly rhythmic sound and frenetic quality triggers an unusual combination of apocalyptic dismay and, at the same time, an undeniable urge to dance. The four-piece post-punk group’s music—grimy, industrial, and atmospheric—is nevertheless rooted in an understanding of music theory, allows Model/Actriz to elicit a unique emotional reaction from its cult following. Singer Cole Haden says the following: “I ascribe to the ideology that Cats (yes, the musical) has infiltrated everything that I’ve ever made. That show is sexual. The juxtaposition of loquacious laments and monologues with bodysuits and writhing. There’s this horrifying monologue. I’m gonna cry thinking about it." He is also a Russophile.    1:07:27 (Pop-up)

OCS  Block Of Ice (Live)   Favoriting Live in San Francisco  Castle Face  2018  Love this song. There cannot be too much of it. This is the longest version of which I am aware. They have worked it over through several lineups over the years. OSees/OCS/Thee Oh Sees, whatever they decide to call themselves, all versions of the band & this song are excellent. I have warned that I might end up playing different versions of "Block Of Ice" through the winter, though this one might be all you really need to hear.    1:20:32 (Pop-up)

Vanishing Twin  Telescope   Favoriting Choose Your Own Adventure  Soundway Records  2016  Formed in 2015, Vanishing Twin came together to make an exploratory record that marries oblique English pop with a palette of arkestral sounds. Having previously released a string of conceptual cassettes under the name Orlando, founder Cathy Lucas named the group after her vanishing twin, an identical sister absorbed in utero, when they were both still a cluster of cells. Drawing on sounds outside of the usual pop vocabulary, the group used forgotten drum machines, home-made electronics, vibraphones, tablas, and harp to invoke the esoteric psychedelia of lost soundtracks, radiophonic experiments and minimal music orchestras.    1:49:48 (Pop-up)
Forever Pavot  Au diable   Favoriting Au Diable Single  Born Bad Records  2022  Self-proclaimed studio rat, Forever Pavot knows exactly how to teleport elsewhere in a few chords. Since Rhapsode and La Pantoufle, his fling with the song format has become a rather serious relationship. One after the other, Emile Sornin is writing all the volumes of his ideal library music, and it appears he's reaching the oddities section. The new album "L'idiophone" drops in Feb 2023.    1:54:10 (Pop-up)

Decisive Pink,Kate NV,Deradoorian  Haffmilch Holiday   Favoriting Haffmilch Holiday - single  Fire Records  2022  Angel Deradoorian and Kate NV have released their first single under the moniker Decisive Pink. “Haffmilch Holiday” is a hazy electro-pop track that’s saturated in synth and punctuated by playful beeps. Humorously, it’s inspired by Deradoorian and NV’s ritual of ordering oat milk cappuccinos during production of their debut album, set for release this year.    2:01:35 (Pop-up)

Oh, Zipperhead, so glad... Honestly, this song gets Crazy! I love this track & band so much... All lineups! John Dwyer is brilliant. He's been doing some Motorik-inspired Psych. Free-Jazz on the side lately. 4 or 5 albums worth now, with different memberships. If you like the more improvisational side of Dwyer/Osees, you'll probably find those other ventures pretty excellent.

Yeah, this is slamming. Interesting to hear this in the wake of Jeff Beck's departure from this blighted orb. Loved his Yardbirds stuff, but after that he really didn't have anything to say though he was a brilliant technician. This is a lot more interesting . . . at least to me.
