Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

For the longest time Minnesota was where all the retreads went, especially quarterbacks! Thankfully that doesn't seem to be the case any longer. I'm actually sort of looking forward to seeing what the Lions do next year. They finished very strong. Although it is SO typical of the Lions to be eliminated from the playoffs over a game they weren't even playing!

as far as picture size, the size can be scaled down from a larger picture... or the picture itself can be resized... for space reasons and loading speed, it's better to present pictures that are of a smaller size. hopefully still crsip and no real loss of quality.

The first two JA albums were very "Marty" focused but the rest not so much. Baxters was very "Paul" heavy, Grace kind of owned "Crown Of Creation" while Paul and Grace shared Volunteers fairly even.

A few years ago, he was playing in The Sloths, the L.A. band, and so was my friend Rik from Wooly Bandits when they came to play SXSW. He and his wife were here and I met them, we all hung out during SXSW quite a bit - had a blast! I'm friends with them on FB since they were here and follow his wife on Insta, too. She's a flourist. Fun people!

I do the show live from my home studio. The only time I pre-record is if I'm at my Florida house because I don't have a working studio there but I can assemble a prerecord show using digital audio files and a voice record app. I'm old school...I did live radio for years when I worked in commercial radio.

Sure...Everything runs through a USB compatible mixing board and configured to interface with the stream using a broadcasting app. The one I use is called BUTT which stands for Broadcast Using This Tool. The mic and audio source, be it vinyl or otherwise all run through the board, through the USB into my laptop and through the broadcast app. The stream has to also be configured to receive your signal at the appointed time.

I honestly don't know. Most of the shows I listen to on R&S sound like prerecords. The preponderance of Drummer shows are live. I believe. Julie B is fun to listen to live as her birds chime in during her talk sets.

You have a lot going on rather than just straight music sets so pre-recording makes sense for your show. All the sound bytes and drops you mix in would be really difficult to do on the fly.

Yeah, that would be hard to keep track of while DJing live. When I F something up. I can just stop and go back and redo. That removes a lot of the anxiety I used to have about pulling off the dense mix live --- feedback, dead air, FCC no no, equipment falling with live mics, etc. etc.

When I was live on WFHB in the 90s I was doing the same stuff, but with a zillion cassettes, albums, singles, reel to reel tapes, live foley FX. It was a crazy tightrope act every week and sometimes I crashed and burned live on air. Luckily it was just community radio, so sponsors to piss off.

Hey there Kip and fellow Discotech Undergrounders! Been listening this evening since Downliners.. I have an early morning tomorrow, so may need to get to bed before midnight.. Wanted to come by and say hello to y'all just the same!! The archives await! Baxters may be my favorite Airplane LP! Still have my original stereo copy bought in real time.. your mono mix sounds so different.. even streaming through my laptop! Love this Savoy Brown "A Step Further" LP with a horn section! Had a U.S.London copy, and saw them play frequently in and around NYC.. Have this Taste LP as well! Rory's slide playing is unmistakable! Was he ever fabulous! Sadly, we lost him way too soon!! His music and spirit are eternal!! The same goes for The Electric Flag and Mike Bloomfield... gone much too soon. "Another Country's" lyrics could have been written today!

The one time I really got in trouble is when I tried to start a Howard Stern type fake radio feud with my "competition" --- Prairie Home Companion on the local NPR station. I tuned it in and put in the mix and challenged Garrison Keillor to live competition. Somebody told the NPR station that I was rebroadcasting their signal. Got a two week suspension for that stunt!!

Yeah, a fun radio war story to tell. I was lucky to have a program manager named Jim Manion who was truly devoted to the freeform ethos. I brought a WFMU attitude to the station and he loved it --- as long as didn't do THAT kind of shit that could get their license pulled.
