A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

That reminds me of how I was happy to have a spring birthday as a kid, rather than have Christmas and birthday lumped together like some of my December b-day friends. Maybe that's why I need to live somewhere with changing seasons. I guess what I'm saying is a May birthday might've predisposed me to constantly needing something to look forward to.

"There was never any score to this and never could be any because it requires a knowledge of the Persian traditional dastgah (actually avaz) Dashti. Persian traditional music is learned by rote form an authorized master and requires memorizing many small melodic pieces called gushe. Even though this video is improvised in a modal jazz genre similar to Miles' 50s Kind of Blue LP, it is also based on the Dashti mode of Persian traditional music and requires Persian instrumental skills." - Dr. L Miller

I have to see which libraries out here support various free streaming services. I have cards for the NYPL and QPL; I may have let my Brooklyn card lapse. I also have to renew all of my cards, which I THINK they let you do online now. I know the last time it lapsed was before COVID and I had to go to an NYPL branch to get it done. So, I chose the fancy branch with Patience and Fortitude (the two lions) so I could feel smart and stuff while standing in a gorgeous newly-renovated reading room while they dug up my records...

@Trouble My Mom, may she rest in peace, was one of the first women to go to Yale's graduate program back in the day, and my immigrant Dad also benefitted from some of the first scholarship programs. Now, someone born today to their identical circumstances wouldn't stand a chance of an Ivy education alas. I feel blessed that I was able to go to Cornell. Oddly and coincidentally enough, I got emailed Cornell's desktop calendar GIF pack this AM and for the first time in ages actually used it for my desktop....

Part of what I feel lucky about is that SLC was, to the extent possible, an outsider (well, outsider-insider) to that elite world precisely because it was all female (presenting) for so long and so just evolved different from the massively endowed real-estate/media company private colleges. Not that the student body didn't mostly come from the elite -- it did. But the nature of teaching and the economies of education there were very different from most "similar" schools.

Though I stumbled so back-assward into it (as I do most things) that on day one, I remember standing on line for registration and thinking, "Where are all the boys?"

One thing that people don't generally realize is that higher education is full of off-ramps. Low income students see those off-ramps much more frequently than students with income advantages. Example: almost every semester I was locked out of registering for classes because I struggled to come up with money for the fees, despite having a huge scholarship that covered most of the tuition. Each semester I thought "is this going to be the semester I don't make it?" Always scrambling to afford housing. It goes on. Even the small number of low income students who make it through expensive schools is amazing.

I think the debt they come out with today is orders of magnitude more than we faced. It's totally off the hook. I managed to get my loans paid off at age forty. Biggest raise I ever got, and I gave it to myself. (Quitting smoking was also a big raise!)

i defaulted on my student loans and was tortured for years by that, and it was a measly bit compared to today

Sorry, pardon my ignorance, SLC=??

Handy Haversack:

I always felt default was a real option -- I always said, "They can't repossess time!"

Unless ... !

But defaulting maybe should be the, er, default position. If the govt. won't eliminate student debt, former students might need to do it en masse.

I thought the debt I had after college was massive but heck, this was 1984 and I did manage to pay it off. But I struggled to keep my financial head above water during those years.

Seems like a previous lifetime, especially since I've recently retired.

default is a horrible place to be. I couldn't get a credit card, they hound you and place all kinds of treachery in your path

I was super lucky RE law school debt. Firstly, I had really good summer jobs during college -- back in the day, $25/hour was the going rate for office gigs when gas was still about a buck a gallon, and I saved up a LOT. Also, Cornell Financial Credit Union had something like a 12% interest rate on saving accounts over a thousand dollars, so my summer money just sat there. I was able to pay off my first year of law school in cash under a special program -- you got a HUGE discount, almost 30%, if you paid up front and agreed not to ask for it back if you dropped out. By living on next to nothing I was able to graduate with only $50K in loans ("only" almost needs the sarcasm tag) because I also worked to pay off my interest during school. Also, when I had it whittle down to $30K, it was close to my 30th birthday. We had tried to get Mom to buy Amazon stock when it first went public, but we missed out, so I told her to go for Krispy Kreme stock. So...for my 30th birthday, she and I went out to dinner, and she gave me two birthday cards---one cutesy one with a few hundred bucks spending money for fun shit, and then a fatter envelope...full of my paid off promisary notes. She had hit over 100K on the Krispy Kreme, which my Stepdad's stockbroker had advised her AGAINST. I'm forever grateful that they got paid off then -- over the ensuing 20 years I have had long periods of unemployment where I was barely scraping by, and paying loans on top of it would have sunk me. My best friend from law school still has almost $300K left on his education-related loans between college and law school, as well as car payments, a mortgage, etc. On top of that, his wife got Stage IV cancer and lost HER job, and they have 2 kids. America is so broken....
