"I know nothing about X, so when putative X expert speaks about X, I take seriously what putative X expert says." Lots of folks respond this way, but obviously it's fallacy, and I don't think pointing out the fallacy is Hilton's point. He concludes in reliance on his own expertise. But surely Musk isn't the only CEO who says "the stupidest shit" about the object of the CEO's respective industry? CEOs aren't expected to know much or anything about the substance of the product their business produces. The guy who runs Coca Cola has a degree in electrical engineering. I get the point of the mastodon post, but frankly I think these kinds of attempted take-downs are silly and unproductive.

Lots of folks respond this way, but obviously it's fallacy, and I don't think pointing out the fallacy is Hilton's point. He concludes in reliance on his own expertise. But surely Musk isn't the only CEO who says "the stupidest shit" about the object of the CEO's respective industry? CEOs aren't expected to know much or anything about the substance of the product their business produces. The guy who runs Coca Cola has a degree in electrical engineering. I get the point of the mastodon post, but frankly I think these kinds of attempted take-downs are silly and unproductive.
