I was ordered to throw out cases of unopened books K level stuff that really doesn't change much year to year.
When I asked if they could be donated they laughed & said "too expensive"
I asked if I could take some books home for people I knew with young kids.
They said "NO, they're paid for by the taxpayer."
I said, "Well I've been a taxpayer in the district for 25 years soooo"

Those Golden Book Encyclopedias were the cheaper way to own reference books.
Aimed at younger people, lots of illustrations. Nothing like Collier's or World Book. We couldn't afford those.

I made that license plate suggestion to my Uncle very tongue in cheek at the time.
NJ will always be "home" for me.
Born in Passaic, lived in Garfield until HS graduation. :)
Now retired, there's no way I could afford to live in NJ now.

I'll never forget my Dad sitting there listening to the sales pitch which ended in a price tag of around $300.00.
My Dad asked the guy "do they have these in Dan's school library?"
The salesman said "Yes."
To which my Dad replied "Good..Then he can use them there. Have a good day"

I've never been a big book person, but I'll look stuff up when I need to. I read more technical stuff than anything. Librarians are the glue that keeps libraries going. there are a few really good libraries around here that we started taking our lil Charlotte to. They have dedicated areas, sometimes a whole floor for kids.
