As I've said before, I believe there are no "bad" years for released music, as FMU shows there's always something good being released, by someone, from any number of genres. However some years are noticeably "thin" on good music! (1990 immediately comes to mind).

But interesting observation on 1984 - there was a bunch of great stuff from '83, and plenty of interesting releases from '85, but '84 seems full of hair metal and dumb pop now that you point that out.
