	12:48pm prof.fuzz: Nerd: You'll have to tell me how you managed your escape from academe. the students are the best, and sometimes only good, part of this gig. i'm tenured, so moving to a more hospitable state is almost impossible at this stage of my career. mornings like this are depressing as hell. glad to be able to hang out here, and get into the classroom this afternoon.

	12:51pm nycmusicnerd: Fuzz: Was sabotaged out of my last FT job (I did admin work) exactly 10 yrs ago today. Spent the past 10 yrs trying to get back into the field. The closest I got was doing academic advising as a temp for $14.50/hr. Denied the perm job because someone who was 20 yrs younger & looked better in a skirt than I did applied for the job.

	12:52pm nycmusicnerd: I've been temping/perming outside the field ever since, while I desperately tried to get back in. For the past 6 months I've been temping as a receptionist. Last week they formally made me an offer to go permanent and I accepted. Now both of my college degrees are going to rot, but it's less work and WAY more money. And I can listen to WFMU while I work! :)
	12:54pm prof.fuzz: local and state elections, and their direct impact on my university are depressing. grading papers is tiring (i spent all day yesterday doing that, and will be grading all day tomorrow to get through this set of preliminary drafts). most of the papers, so far, have been ok, so there's hope for the final revisions. Nerd: Sorry to hear that. the petty politics are the worst. a lot of that going on in my world right now too. happy to be teaching during two meetings today (so i have an excused absence). my mental health hobby is basically what's keeping everything together. yeehaw. looking forward to hitting the road in early january and hopefully crossing paths with many of my imaginary wfmu friends again.

Hiring/spending $$ has slowed to a trickle, and higher ed always takes longer to come out of 1 trend and into another than other fields. If I were in my 30s I could maybe ride out the trend. But I ain't in my 30s no more.

	1:01pm Handy Haversack: Proud to be someone's imaginary friend! nycmn: My hot take, as a nonacademic employee of a major university, is that much like sports team owners who cry poverty for the on-field product while extracting billions in profit, the universities are just fine but have used the excuse of the pandemic to double-down on insane tuition and further real-estate grabs in addition to the long-standing trend toward extreme antilabor positions and a focus on part-time wage work. But I'm a bad person.
	1:02pm clarke: i find that what handy says runs pretty true for pretty much everything - we can raise our prices because we CAN.

	1:05pm Pete from Boston (and NJ): Higher ed economics are severely messed up. I hear a lot of people blaming it on an endless pool of guaranteed tuition loans, don’t know how solid that idea is or not. I have friends scrambling to escape positions at small colleges that are dropping like flies because they cannot compete with the resort-like bigger schools. And when they try to compete, they end up having to raise tuition or lower standards or both, which both hasten the bleeding.
	1:05pm WoodsOfMaine: Hiring practices in a lot of industries have devolved in odd ways. You can read many articles where tech companies claim they can't find candidates. What they _should_ say is that can't find qualified candidates under 40 years of age.

	12:51pm nycmusicnerd: Fuzz: Was sabotaged out of my last FT job (I did admin work) exactly 10 yrs ago today. Spent the past 10 yrs trying to get back into the field. The closest I got was doing academic advising as a temp for $14.50/hr. Denied the perm job because someone who was 20 yrs younger & looked better in a skirt than I did applied for the job.

	12:52pm nycmusicnerd: I've been temping/perming outside the field ever since, while I desperately tried to get back in. For the past 6 months I've been temping as a receptionist. Last week they formally made me an offer to go permanent and I accepted. Now both of my college degrees are going to rot, but it's less work and WAY more money. And I can listen to WFMU while I work! :)
	12:54pm prof.fuzz: local and state elections, and their direct impact on my university are depressing. grading papers is tiring (i spent all day yesterday doing that, and will be grading all day tomorrow to get through this set of preliminary drafts). most of the papers, so far, have been ok, so there's hope for the final revisions. Nerd: Sorry to hear that. the petty politics are the worst. a lot of that going on in my world right now too. happy to be teaching during two meetings today (so i have an excused absence). my mental health hobby is basically what's keeping everything together. yeehaw. looking forward to hitting the road in early january and hopefully crossing paths with many of my imaginary wfmu friends again.

	1:01pm Handy Haversack: Proud to be someone's imaginary friend! nycmn: My hot take, as a nonacademic employee of a major university, is that much like sports team owners who cry poverty for the on-field product while extracting billions in profit, the universities are just fine but have used the excuse of the pandemic to double-down on insane tuition and further real-estate grabs in addition to the long-standing trend toward extreme antilabor positions and a focus on part-time wage work. But I'm a bad person.

	1:05pm Pete from Boston (and NJ): Higher ed economics are severely messed up. I hear a lot of people blaming it on an endless pool of guaranteed tuition loans, don’t know how solid that idea is or not. I have friends scrambling to escape positions at small colleges that are dropping like flies because they cannot compete with the resort-like bigger schools. And when they try to compete, they end up having to raise tuition or lower standards or both, which both hasten the bleeding.
	1:05pm WoodsOfMaine: Hiring practices in a lot of industries have devolved in odd ways. You can read many articles where tech companies claim they can't find candidates. What they _should_ say is that can't find qualified candidates under 40 years of age.
