	12:29pm Dean: Meanwhile, I got my 35CD box of Caravan studio and live stuff a couple days ago, still working my way through the Al Stewart box. Saw The Dogs last weekend at Ivy Room, a neighborhood dive bar. They were damn fine, as good as when I first saw them in '78.

	12:36pm Dean: But you know, Linn are masters at reeling in customers like me. Just as I was awaiting the delivery of phase 1, including the Kandid cartridge, at the time the top-of-the-line, a newer t-o-t-l appears, out of reach of my budget. Likewise, I went for the new Lingo power supply, but there's also on offer a completely different power supply, also only a dream. The Dogs were in top form. I saw them at a high school in Whittier. Opening act was a band I knew from my high school across town. I shared this with Mary and Loren. They were impressed.

	12:38pm Dean: Huntington Beach, The Golden Bear. Never made it there, but probably heading to HB at Christmas. I did catch David Johansen at Cuckoo's Nest, nearby in Costa Mesa.

For some reason the Louis Armstrong song and your comments made me think of a family story - my grandma's sister Mary was a talented young piano player and a budding flapper in '27 who got kicked out of the house when her conservative father heard her playing jazz on the piano. I've been a jazz fan ever since I heard that story (in the '70s)
	12:40pm Dean: No more Mabuhay, to my knowledge. My neighborhood coffee shop has a wall-size pastiche of old punk flyers, many from MG.
	🛒 12:40pm Alvy Singer: In regards to Louis Armstrong track, this piece really highlights his virtuosity, mastery and dominance over his instrument! Some sections of his playing on this recording is so nuanced my ears are not able to pick up and interpret or translate what I'm hearing! A genuine musical genius!

	12:42pm Dean: But 924 Gilman, just three blocks from my joint, is back up and running. Saw The Cramps at the Palladium.
	12:43pm doctorjazz: What Alvy said @12:40-you can hear how much greater Satch's technical prowess and conception are than the other players in the band (who were fine musicians of the time). It didn't take long until all jazz players were incorporating Armstrong's innovations into their playing.

	12:44pm Uncle Michael: The only person that started at nearly the same level as Satch was King Oliver, in my opinion.
	12:44pm Dean: And now and then I can hear the occasional shows at Ashkenaz, which closed during pandemic for renovation and, of course, for pandemic.
	🛒 12:44pm Brian in UK: Alvy Singer. A friend years ago who played trumpet, played a Louis Armstrong record & said did you hear that part. Well to my untrained ear it meant nothing but to him it was genius.

	12:47pm Dean: Where was Mandrakes, johnk77? New Orleans Cafe is down the street, but it's now an auto shop. First Hot Tuna LP was recorded there. I wish I could say, "Wow, when I went to Music Box to hear Zeke I remember seeing that brick!"

	🛒 12:48pm Alvy Singer: @UM--What about about Paul Whiteman? Even though Whiteman's music may not have been "pure jazz" (what is, then as much as now?), its very popularity helped "legitimize" Armstrong and led many to discover and appreciate his more raw variant of jazz.

I've also slipped $2 bills in some of them. Told my kids, hoping it would coax them to check out the literature. Nope.

Likewise, I went for the new Lingo power supply, but there's also on offer a completely different power supply, also only a dream. The Dogs were in top form. I saw them at a high school in Whittier. Opening act was a band I knew from my high school across town. I shared this with Mary and Loren. They were impressed.

For some reason the Louis Armstrong song and your comments made me think of a family story - my grandma's sister Mary was a talented young piano player and a budding flapper in '27 who got kicked out of the house when her conservative father heard her playing jazz on the piano. I've been a jazz fan ever since I heard that story (in the '70s)

Some sections of his playing on this recording is so nuanced my ears are not able to pick up and interpret or translate what I'm hearing! A genuine musical genius!
