Southern Traditional Singers (led by Hugh McGraw) | Heavenly Meeting | The Social Harp: Early American Shape-Note Songs | Rounder | 1994 | 19th century American song books that used notes in different shapes to aid singers and teach singing came to be known as "shape-note hymnals" and the style of singing from these "shape-note singing." Christian hymnals using this system were among the most enduring uses of this notation. Congregations divided up the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass singers in groups forming a square with the conductor at the center. This is called the "hollow square." This was another means of assisting the singers, so that they could stay on pitch by singing with the people in their quarter of the square. | 2:29:37 (Pop-up) | ||||

Teaching the Ukrainian kids has been great. (Thanks, Carol, too for asking!) From initial chaos to team-building and learning with purpose and fun. Well-received by the new colleagues and principal. The school is right at the river Neckar so we sometimes sneak out and do our conversations along a river stroll. Or I take them for a cocoa but they do the orders in German. :-)
Hiya Pabs!
Ooh lots of German-ic vibes in the music today, Carol! ♡

'T was later when the summer went
Than when the cricket came,
And yet we knew that gentle clock
Meant nought but going home.
'T was sooner when the cricket went
Than when the winter came,
Yet that pathetic pendulum
Keeps esoteric time.
Morning

Listen
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.
