Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

Kip see you in a bit here. Just saw FL to get hit with Nicole coming from the Bahamas

Hey MOM! Thankfully, I'm still in Michigan.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Discotech Underground:

Luckily the projected path is to the south.
Avatar 🥁 7:00pm
MOM WHIG:

Kip good to hear that of course
  7:01pm
Dean:

Chiming in only to say thank you for playing a band I have long yearned to see on a WFMU playlist. Epitaph. It's about time.
Avatar 🥁 7:01pm
WLSClark:

Well, I didn't even know Kip was on tonight. I'll be listening but busy, so doubt much chat. Hi Mom!!

Good evening and welcome to the show! Hey Dean, Mom and Clark!

Dean-I have had this LP since 1983 and it remains a solid favorite!
Avatar 🥁 7:02pm
MOM WHIG:

Andrew in T & Kevon in Doomsville
  7:03pm
Dean:

I had it then and all of their early records, but I unloaded them, much to my regret.

Hey, Andrew! Hey Kevin! Welcome, welcome to the night time edition of "Discotech Underground!"
  7:04pm
Kevin in Doomsville:

Hi there Mom et al.

Discotech Underground:

Glad to have you back, Kevin! The door is always open.
Avatar 🥁 7:16pm
WLSClark:

Wow, whats with this version? Love this 45 and it is not the US 45 version!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:16pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-It's the UK and European version.
Avatar 🥁 7:17pm
WLSClark:

Interesting--no duophonic! haha
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Discotech Underground:

Yep, it's from an original Island label single.

Hi Kip. Ah, this old album.

Hello hello, TDK60!
Avatar 🥁 7:26pm
WLSClark:

This LP was so cool to get back in 70! Marble vinyl! I had NEVER seen anything like that---and a hang on the wall LP fold out cover with hole ready to hang!!! AND the MUSIC was!!!!!
Avatar 7:27pm
TDK60:

Hi Mom W. WSLC -great geetar slingin' album too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm
coelacanth∅:

good evening Kip and all
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-SO many great songs, too! Just a solid album all the way around. I've played several of them over various shows.

Hello coealacanth!
Avatar 🥁 7:28pm
WLSClark:

TDK and so odd that she teamed up for LP with mama Cass a year later.
Avatar 🥁 7:29pm
MOM WHIG:

coela - hi there
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Discotech Underground:

The album with Cass has some great songs on it, though...then he'd rejoin Traffic shortly after that!
Avatar 🥁 7:43pm
WLSClark:

Kip, so funny the LP was on Dave's Blue Thumb, while the 45s from the LP were on Cass' Dunhill label.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-I remember the cover...Dave on the front, Cass on the back.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:47pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-I actually have one of the singles, a promo on Dunhill. I can't remember the title off hand, though.
Avatar 🥁 7:51pm
WLSClark:

Kip, I DID have both, one with promo sleeve, but may have sold recently on my sale lists. I dont think so, but....
Avatar 🥁 7:52pm
WLSClark:

Focus--some incredible music. Thought about using Sylvia as backing music on my drop in, but stuck to 60s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-I had "Moving Waves" back in the day, which I bought because "Hocus Pocus" was a hit. The rest of the album was my first exposure to prog rock.
Avatar 🥁 8:00pm
WLSClark:

Kip, may list that one soon too. House of the King--just amazing 45 too! Hocus Pocus nice long version on LP too!
  8:02pm
Dean:

Just made it home on bus. What a playlist I've missed! After seeing Sutherland Bros. and Camel I wondered if we'd hear Caravan. Yesterday, my 35CD + DVDs box arrived, a ton of their music, much of which I already have.
Avatar 8:05pm
TDK60:

Sounds close to pals Soft Machine.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-I have the Dave Sinclair era stuff and a few of the later ones. Always loved Caravan from the first time I heard them.
  8:06pm
Dean:

Same here. First album I heard was the one with the orchestra, a terrific sampler of earlier tracks all beefed up with orchestral wash.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-Land Of The Grey And Pink was my first one. I bought it for $2.99 at a used record store in St. Paul.
  8:08pm
Dean:

One reason I picked up the box is that it has Blind Dog at St. Dunstan's, which is not Sinclair. Still, I love that album. Bunch of live stuff, too, I believe.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Discotech Underground:

Girls Who Go Plump In The Night is probably my favorite non-Sinclair LP. Waterloo Lily has it's moments, also.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Discotech Underground:

You can certainly hear the early rumblings of "Nine Feet Underground" in this piece.
Avatar 🥁 8:39pm
WLSClark:

Magical show so far, Kip! Gotta leave for an hour at 8, but great stuff!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Discotech Underground:

Thanks, Clark! I appreciate you hanging out for a while.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-Speaking of Soft Machine and Dave Sinclair, how about some Matching Mole?
Avatar 🥁 8:44pm
WLSClark:

This is like finding a special treat at a record show! Eargasm did not have his show tonight and I looked around and...!!!!!
  8:45pm
Dean:

Absolutely! And Bridge of Sighs takes me back. I remember biking to the Wherehouse to buy it one day not long after release.

Also, had the good fortune of seeing Hawkwind at the Starwood with Calvert.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:47pm
Discotech Underground:

Clark-This was kind of a fluke. They advertised for fill ins and this came open so I thought, "why not?"
  8:48pm
Dean:

Also saw Camel at the Roxy, twice. First was the original line-up, then the one with Richard Sinclair and Mel Collins. Good times.
  8:55pm
Dean:

Now that you have satisfied my Epitaph craving, let me ask if you are ever inclined to play Barclay James Harvest?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-I'm not against playing some BJH at all! Just didn't manage to pull any out for this episode but I'll keep it in mind going forward.
Avatar 🥁 8:59pm
MOM WHIG:

Thanks KIP -- see you Thursday
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:00pm
Discotech Underground:

You bet, Mom!
  9:01pm
Dean:

Oh, of course. I just mean that I haven't heard an expected proportion of BJH or Epitaph (among others) over the years. Much of this could be a function of my own listening habits.

Geez, the Caravan box comes with an autographed photo. Signed by Pye, Richard, and Dave.

  9:22pm
Dean:

For me, a little Zappa goes a long way. But hearing this reminds me of visits to a friend in Fairfield, CT, on Memorial Day, when a local publicly funded radio station devoted the morning to Zappa. It was a treat.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm
Discotech Underground:

I'm a big Zappa fan but I don't like EVERYTHING he ever did. I'm not a fan of the Flo and Eddie "200 Motels" era nor do I like the 80's electronic stuff, either. The original Mothers, post F&E up through about 1977 are my prime periods.
  9:31pm
Dean:

My first intro to Mothers was Mothermania, an LP owned by the older brother of a fourth grade friend of mine. "Brown Shoes" hit the spot then and there.
  9:33pm
Dean:

Keep meaning to acquire this Utopia record. I once had a bootleg from around this time, but that was all for Rundgren. Later, I saw him at the Roxy during the tour that ended up on Back to the Bars.

it's wednesday, right, ok (been a long day, get people off the streets to shelter in the cafeteria again at the shelter. Felt like I just did this, stupid hurricane).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-I managed to catch the Utopia reunion a few years back where the first set was all songs from the first two albums! Totally nailed it!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Discotech Underground:

NGH! Good to see you! Just doing a fill in spot.
  9:38pm
Dean:

For crying out loud, another landmark, ethos. There's that photo by Armando Gallo of Peter Gabriel wearing their t-shirt, not long before he left Genesis.
  9:39pm
Dean:

Can I guess that Gabriel Bondage is just around the corner?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Discotech Underground:

Dean-I have that album but I'm about out of time, unfortunately.
  9:46pm
Dean:

They have two albums!
  9:47pm
Dean:

What a splendid surprise set tonight. Thank you for the goodies of yore.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm

Dean-I have the blue vinyl one, but I can't remember the title.
  9:48pm
Dean:

Second album, Another Trip to Earth.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:49pm
