A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

The program command is as thus: Commit this (whatever it might be) to memory. Memory demands it's own usage. Memory runs a plantation of souls. Memory invented tennis.

"That is one gurgling hurdle fist," one strapping sapling said to another, "It sure is."

Because Louisiana is under a different legal system based on French civil law rather than English common law, there were some strange laws on the books they didn't get rid of till the 70s or 80s. I am doing production editing on a book about the different rights extended by states to married (white) women before women's suffrage. Basically, these were extended by male legislators for a variety of reasons, very few of which had the benefit of the women as their goal -- perpetuation of slavery and westward expansion of settler-colonialism were big ones, but also just basic land-grabbiness. But it also did establish a precedent for "granting" rights to (white) women.

Of course, the problem with rights "granted" is that they can always be taken away ...

To Handy and those interested, just now reading Linda Colley's "The Gun The Pen, & The Ship"...about the spread of written constitutions. The impetus for them was the need to raises taxes and recruit soldiers...so the setting out of rights were aimed at men because the rights granted were for those who would fight ( primarily ) . Now in the chapter on why women were left out, so often, of the rights granted ( until 20th Century ) Exceptions were in places very far from centers of power ( like New Zealand and Finland ) Very interesting stuff.

I think Tennessee Williams took a cue from Law & Order when he came up with the address. I bet there was a L&O marathon on TBS when he wrote it.

It was sometime in the early 90s, I tried to follow Patrolman Mancuso's walk as described in the book. Walking down Constantinople, I thought I found the house, the banana tree, etc. A big dog ran up to a fence and started angrily barking at me, but I didn't run away because of the fence. The owner came out, I said to them "It's alright" and they replied, in a deep Louisiana drawl - "No it ain't". Indelible memories. (I got out of there quick)
