Maybe Mr. Springsteen was trying to say something nuanced in the song's verses, but the chorus is too easily misinterpreted by the less nuanced patriotic types? So, maybe the song fails in a way? Not sure. (I'm not a huge Bruce fan but I like some of his stuff.)
