	6:31pm Mr. Pumpy: The Internet Archive is possibly the greatest thing about the internet. I recently watched Shuji Terayama's short film Emperor Tomato Ketchup on the site before going to see Stereolab on their current tour. The film is weird and somewhat problematic, but it was amazing that I could watch it for free on the archive. As a result, I finally had additional insight into what is possibly the bands most famous album, being they named it after the film. I have read, watched, listened to so much on the Internet Archive over the past two decades. It is an amazing resource. I thank you, Brewster!

Our government is happy to give tax write offs so they can shirk their social responsibilities and push them on to others. It disgusts me to see us relying on charities to solve real problems.

National Lampoon Radio Hour); books ('Slut', after Sheila B. recommended it); music: Dead shows, Dan Bern shows, etc. ... and movies like The ('62) Manchurian Candidate with Angela Lansbury. The servers - well, large portions of them - figure into research at my old university.

I like that this exists, but I don't think I'm the ideal user. At least as I'm currently constituted. And I view even the nonevil parts of the internet pretty circumspectly. I just am not sure it has proved its use yet.

	6:39pm wendy del formaggio: Brewster is right about interlibrary loan. I use it about twice a month for books and DVDs. Who needs (shudder) amazon prime etc to watch movies? I have gotten TONS of odd and indy movies through ILL. FOR FREE. Also, know this: every time you borrow materials from your public library, you legitimize it to whoever controls its budget. THIS many people are borrowing THIS many items. In a data-driven culture, this is crucial. GO TO THE LIBRARY!
	6:39pm disco_nap_: Big same...reading words on a physical page or just looking at the world around me is such a relief to my poor, screen-strained eyes at the end of the day.
	6:40pm castor: You should turn the sites of the servers into shrines that confer special benefits to their supplicants, and you can have festivals and rituals at them that enable deep community bonding.

	🤖 6:42pm Handy Haversack: Books, Franco? Small, nonprofit publishers are really as captured by the Big Tech nightmare as all the rest of us. It's really hard. Amazon sets the terms for so much of the market. The licensing deals for e-books are determined by the huge companies and not by the small publishers because they have no other way of getting books to the libraries. Or at least, no way that there are personnel to handle at any kind of scale. Even just delivering e-book files is so hard. The capital investment required means that it tends to be done only by the massive companies, and then small publishers have to use their infrastructure.
	6:42pm Lil Nasty: I'm a librarian, and Brewster has been a hero of mine for some time. So happy to hear him bringing attention to these issues
	6:43pm disco_nap_: I never realized there were e-books on the Internet Archive...is there a way to download them to devices too? Like a phone, boko, etc.

	6:44pm DanFA: I usually use Hoopla for ebooks if the book in question is too expensive or I'm not sure I really want to commit to buying a physical copy. If I am going to buy a physical book, I'll mostly use a small bookstore. Or Barnes and Noble if they already have something in stock.

	6:45pm Franco Twinkie: In L.A. literate people have these little bird houses in their front yards full of books they don't want. Today I got a book on the history of Bollywood movies written by a professor of Anthorpology at New York University. It's a book goddamnit, and it was free!

	6:46pm Mr. Pumpy: @Wendy, I agree. However, as a film fanatic, I have come to appreciate some streaming services as they have titles I've been looking for which I can not find at the library. I do a bit of both. There is a great streaming site called Kanopy which bridges the two worlds. they are tied into the public library network and as long as you have a library card from one of the participating libraries you can search for and watch a good grip of content that comes from the system and watch 6 a month for free. Kanopy.com...it's amazing. Also, Metrograph does something similar based on their theater's content in NYC and their curated film festivals and lecture series.

	6:31pm Mr. Pumpy: The Internet Archive is possibly the greatest thing about the internet. I recently watched Shuji Terayama's short film Emperor Tomato Ketchup on the site before going to see Stereolab on their current tour. The film is weird and somewhat problematic, but it was amazing that I could watch it for free on the archive. As a result, I finally had additional insight into what is possibly the bands most famous album, being they named it after the film. I have read, watched, listened to so much on the Internet Archive over the past two decades. It is an amazing resource. I thank you, Brewster!

National Lampoon Radio Hour); books ('Slut', after Sheila B. recommended it); music: Dead shows, Dan Bern shows, etc. ... and movies like The ('62) Manchurian Candidate with Angela Lansbury. The servers - well, large portions of them - figure into research at my old university.

I have gotten TONS of odd and indy movies through ILL. FOR FREE. Also, know this: every time you borrow materials from your public library, you legitimize it to whoever controls its budget. THIS many people are borrowing THIS many items. In a data-driven culture, this is crucial. GO TO THE LIBRARY!

	🤖 6:42pm Handy Haversack: Books, Franco? Small, nonprofit publishers are really as captured by the Big Tech nightmare as all the rest of us. It's really hard. Amazon sets the terms for so much of the market. The licensing deals for e-books are determined by the huge companies and not by the small publishers because they have no other way of getting books to the libraries. Or at least, no way that there are personnel to handle at any kind of scale. Even just delivering e-book files is so hard. The capital investment required means that it tends to be done only by the massive companies, and then small publishers have to use their infrastructure.

	6:46pm Mr. Pumpy: @Wendy, I agree. However, as a film fanatic, I have come to appreciate some streaming services as they have titles I've been looking for which I can not find at the library. I do a bit of both. There is a great streaming site called Kanopy which bridges the two worlds. they are tied into the public library network and as long as you have a library card from one of the participating libraries you can search for and watch a good grip of content that comes from the system and watch 6 a month for free. Kanopy.com...it's amazing. Also, Metrograph does something similar based on their theater's content in NYC and their curated film festivals and lecture series.
