A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

While we have been - finally - getting a little rain here in the Mid-Valley, we are under the average for the year, and it still feels dry to me. We need a good, proper, Pacific Northwest soaking.

Rochester NY is a pretty gloomy, rainy place and I'd say we've been on track. Got awfully cold and damp a week or so ago so this week's warmer and still damp has been a nice break.

I really need to explore more Renaldo & The Loaf. I always enjoy it when I hear it, but I'm over hear listening to my precious Residents albums for some reason. I should move on.
Avatar 9:41pm
Mr Fab:

sometimes Renaldo & The Loaf out-Residented the Residents.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Austin Rich:

It's not hard; I love the Residents, but they can get a little repetitive, and they sometimes rely on gimmicks in a way that I find a little boring. There's some stuff that sounds downright accessible at times.
  9:43pm
Arvo:

In my humble opinion, Renaldo & The Loaf satiate me a bit more than Residents in terms of lo-fi and strange sound design.

I definitely do not miss Chicago winters. There were plenty where the windchill was -40.

I love Foetus, by the way. Got to do an interview with him not long after this album came out.

Currently my favorites by Residents are Eskimo, Not Available, Third Reich N' Roll, Commercial Album, Worm Wood, and Freak Show, but but none of them match Renaldo & The Loaf in terms of me being ecstatic about home recordings.

I discussed the inclusion of pop music with Austin, I do like the Doors, but I hope you'll see that we've got something else cooking!

The one time I went to New York City, it snowed 9 inches and my show was cancelled. I did get to perform on WFMU, and also another college radio station whose call letters escape me, so I was happy. I really loved New York, but I am not inclined to be that competitive about expenses.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:10pm

I've probably said this before, but: seeing Ween live was the closest thing to seeing The Grateful Dead that I've ever gotten. There was a huge parking lot scene, lots of drugs and people trading live Ween tapes. Inside: lots of joints, and when the show started, tons of people started taping the show. It was very surreal.

Ween aren't bad, and are clearly very good at what they do. But I think they lost the plot after a point, and I loose enthusiasm with their newer albums.

I do adore the Mitch bits! I find it surprising I can't name a..... waaaait, they did the Push The Little Daisies song? I can think of one Ween song, then. Still, surprised I missed my Weendow on them. I feel like there was a time I would have been a big fan.

I think I just had my fill with Ween around the same time I had my fill of Dead Milkmen and Tom Waits and Mike Patton, although recently I have revisited a bit of Tom Waits. Typically I'm going for older stuff.

Coel! I thought the same thing about Gentle On My Mind! That Dean Martin record was a thrift find for me, and I do enjoy it but not for the lyrical prowess...

It's the histrionics for me. I will say that I did see Fantomas more than once, and also I saw Tomahawk do a surprise show when they were touring with Tool. Tom Waits 70s stuff is still gold to me, but I get into phases where I want to listen to obscure stuff just so I can have a sense of privacy. That said, I would love to see Tom Waits live.

Tom Waits live is half-theatrics, half a huge band performing something wild. The show I saw was VERY long, and he even did a small set of songs as a trio, which was all old material.

Still... the show was so long I almost fell asleep.
Avatar 10:28pm
Mr Fab:

everyone needs to send me your crucial Ween tracks so I can add some to the Sheena stream. What little I heard by 'em sounded horrible, but they seem pretty popular round these parts so I figure they're a Sheena listener fave.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:29pm

Fantomas used to put on a fun show. Not for everyone, but I loved their convoluted T. Rex cover.
Avatar 10:29pm
Mr Fab:

I saw the Tom Waits/Robert Wilson musical "The Black Ryder" and it was SPECTACULAR.

I remember pitch bent vocals on a song by Ween about a kid having spinal meningitis or something?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Austin Rich:

Maybe we should all vote on a Ween playlist? They can be controversial.

He did a little of The Black Rider at the show I saw, but not the whole thing. That albums is very special.

Tom Waits, I'll Shoot the Moon, from The Black Rider was my wife and my wedding dance song :)

Crazy, Barno! The Black Rider might be my fave Waits album.

And speaking of Dean Martin, he provided our first dance song.
  10:33pm
Arvo:

Barno, that's sweet! I think Tom Waits' Heart of Saturday Night is a perfect album. It's been a long time since I listened to his 80s stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

Sketches of Winkle off the Pod is fun, very The Move.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Austin Rich:

My mom loved "Heart of Saturday Night," and used to listen to it when I was a kid, but didn't like any other Tom Waits, so I never heard any, and actually thought he only ever made one album. In the 90's, when my friends were all excited about "Bone Machine," I was really confused. Too me a while to catch up.

"The Pod" is my fave Ween album.

Bone Machine was my introduction to Tom Waits. It blew my mind. I remember that album was up against a bunch of grunge albums for best alternative album for the Grammys - and it won.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm

i like Waits when he's got pipes and stuff for percussion. never cared for much of his grumbly stuff.
a soldier's things is one notable exception.

"Grumbly Stuff," is now my new favorite genre of music.
  10:38pm
Arvo:

There just aren't enough degrees of separation from Ween and The Bloodhound Gang for me. i need to be in a certain mood for Weird Al novelty. I like older novelty records much more.

"Rains On Me" was a Tom Waits track that I considered, but did not include.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm

cool, i get a nickle each time you use it!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

Arvo and I certainly agree on Novelty Music: Older is where my mind goes these days. Like Spike Jones, who I think is Superb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Barno in Akron:

I thought it was cool that Tom Waits had his son introduce turntables to the "orchestra" I was hesitant to embrace the idea, but it was very well executed for Tom Waits style

coelacanth∅: I know what you mean - "Swordfishtrombones" was the first Waits album I bought. He went from "singer/songwriter" to Beefheart-ian bangin on brake drums. Count me in!

I just want to recommend the demos from Alice over the final Alice album. If we are going to talk about Tom Waits, we all must first know about the demo version to "Tabletop Joe", I insist.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

i'd like to hear it.
the only Springsteen album i really like was a demo that wasn't meant for release; and no contest that let it be...naked is good, while let it be is ...well, pretty bad, for a beatles album.
  10:46pm
Arvo:

Barno & Mr. Fab: The demos are better in my opinion, but also kinda proof that the grumble thing isn't necessary. I know the grumble, I have the grumble at times too, but it's not his only voice.

I have so many personal associations with most of Tom Waits' music (ex-boyfriends, ex-friends) that it's mostly hard for me to listen to. Also found myself more and more irritated with the persona. That said, now and again a track will hit me just right.
