We used to go to Belmont Park twice a year here in NYC for horse races, on Kentucky Derby day and my birthday. I really did love it, and my dad was a handicapper and had even worked at Belmont in the fifties. But eventually I couldn't square my ethics with the way horses are treated by an industry that claims to idolize them and had to stop going. I do miss it, though, even still.

I even miss taking the occasional bet (usually on the Preakness and Belmont stakes) to the OTB in my neighborhood which was a slice of LIFE, yo. But somehow New York State managed to MISmanage a monopoly on *gambling*, and the OTBs failed. The mind, it boggles.
