Hi there Larry and all other listeners!

Good afternoon from Wisconsin, where fall has arrived.

Hi Andrew! Jeff!

It's getting progressively more autumnal hereabouts, as well.

Loving this show already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

Thanks!

Dean:

Harbor Freeway is a mildly deceptive name. You'd think it runs along a scenic harbor. But it runs directly inland from Long Beach Harbor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Phillippe:

howdy. nice tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean! Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Michael 98145:

@Dean, yup, not a scenic drive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Funky16Corners:

Beautiful song, though

Woo:

Hello from a western suburb of Chicago. Lovely day here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
Funky16Corners:

Hello Woo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Phillippe:

The weekend I took my son for his Cal St - Long Beach college tour, they were having the F1 race. It was weird driving across a bridge and looking down at the street I was crossing over to see race cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Funky16Corners:

That's cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Woo:

I love California Here I Come. Thanks for playing it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Phillippe:

Next year there will be a stock car race on the surface streets of Chicago. That will be interesting...
  3:25pm
Dean:

I imagine the Long Beach Grand Prix would be a real attraction for prospective students.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Woo:

Phillippe, that NASCAR thing in Chicago doesn't sound good. Maybe it will cut down on carjacking for a week.
  3:26pm
Dean:

Al Jolson sings just like Al Jolson.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm

Hi Larry, folks out there!

Hi Larry and testifiers everywhere!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Michael 98145:

We once lived a few blocks from Cal State LB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
Phillippe:

@Woo I agree. I love watching racing, and I know they keep trying to widen the audience, but race cars on Lake Shore Drive just seems wrong...
  3:30pm
Dean:

It's fun to fly into the LB airport and catch a glimpse of the pyramid on campus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi Rey! Doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Funky16Corners:

Speaking of racing cars, this tune originated in a movie about formula one racers.

This is the perfect mood music for strolling on the beach at sunset.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Funky16Corners:

Oops, sorry about the duplicate!
  3:37pm
Dean:

Whoops. First read the title of this track, "California Mortgage." Freudian, at least.
Avatar 3:38pm
Erica:

Haha Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Funky16Corners:

@Dean - another part of the story!
  3:39pm
Dean:

Yes, it is. That and earthquake insurance.

Joe Sample's "Carmel" would fit nicely here, but for its relatively recent vintage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Phillippe:

cool! which movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

Winning from 1969 with Paul Newman
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Woo:

Phillippe, and it sounds like the city didn't get a good deal on the $$.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Phillippe:

I do believe I saw that one when it came out! I think Grand Prix with James Garner was just before that one
Avatar 3:42pm
Erica:

I prefer the Iguana version of California My Way. Very catchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Funky16Corners:

I like Grand Prix, a lot. Winning somewhat less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Believe it or not this was written by Willie Hutch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Michael 98145:

Wasn't Grand Prix a Cinerama movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Michael 98145:

Ah, yes www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm not sure. I always dug it for the number of international actors in it. I mean Francoise Hardy plays the girlfriend of one of the drivers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Phillippe:

@Woo not surprised. I don't know if they are greedy or the sport is in such a bad state, but the money isn't what it used to be. It's all privately held so anything cost related seems to be firewalled. They don't even publish purse payouts anymore.
Avatar 3:46pm
Erica:

@Larry Never heard of him but I'll check him out.

@Erica - Soul/funk singer/songwriter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm

Co-written by Marvin Hamlisch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Funky16Corners:

Yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Funky16Corners:

He wrote it for Lesley Gore, along with a bunch of other things on the same album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Jeff Ash:

I'll stick with the original arrangement.
Avatar 3:49pm

Hamlisch, the guy who covered "The Entertainer" back in the 70s, right?

Same guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - That's a good album, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm

I forgot Jessica Walter was in Grand Prix. Quite the interesting career, especially at the beginning and the end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Yes, indeed. She was great. Play Misty For Me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Phillippe:

She was the perfect Lucille Bluth...

I've been watching Reservation Dogs over the past couple weeks, and the kids on the show have a bit of an obsession for getting to "Cali"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

The legend persists.
Avatar 3:57pm
Erica:

Rice and beans?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Funky16Corners:

Yeah, cheap eats. Never had it?
Avatar 3:59pm
Erica:

Yes but not together. Although I am curious to eat beans on toast lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Funky16Corners:

Beans and rice is great. Look for some recipes. Beans on toast is just baked beans and toast. I'd eat it, but not exactly "cooking"
Avatar 4:01pm
Erica:

Yeah Larry. But British people call beans on toast a cuisine. As for beans and rice, I prefer Spanish rice with beans myself.
