Hi, all! Looking forward to these singles and lots of Grapefruit goodies.

Erica - I wouldn't call this a repeat, since I spent two days putting together this particular broadcast!

Actually, parts of it were in show #2, but when I redid that it had to be chopped down to suit the Bunny's 1:58 format. In restoring the middle and end, I added almost another hour.

I remember these shows and I am overjoyed to revisit them-- especially knowing how the other station you were broadcasting on was run on computers held together with spit & string at times and could go off the air at any second.

I am so sorry, Erica! Simon is actually about 18. I rescued him as an adult.

The vocal harmonies on You Are She just so so great! This should have been a bigger, anything off Distant Shores should have been a hit.

LPs were too short for a long time, then a lot of CDs were too long, almost double-LP length. You don't have to fill up the whole thing!

Thanks, Maria!
Avatar 7:01pm
cometothesunshine:

When I last played this show two years ago - I had to chop out this single and the next one for time. Happy they are back in.
Avatar 7:02pm
cometothesunshine:

I am still not sure why I played 21 singles this week (instead of the usual 20) but I must've had a reason in 2006.
Avatar 7:05pm
cometothesunshine:

The original show #2 had about 30 mins of Easybeats songs, I let Orange Peel play most of those in his show this week (so we get more Grapefruit).
  7:07pm
uptownjen:

Agreed. Such an incredible collection of songs! I always turn Grapefruit up any time I hear them.
Avatar 7:08pm
cometothesunshine:

I really love this album. I got it for my birthday in 1996 or 1997.
Avatar 7:10pm
cometothesunshine:

At least my first copy!
Avatar 7:21pm
cometothesunshine:

George Alexander such a formidable songwriting talent.
Avatar 7:22pm
cometothesunshine:

The whole of Grapefruit really had something special. If they had been more successful in 1968, they may have never changed their style entirely in 1969.
Avatar 7:25pm
David in California:

Hello, Andrew. Given the link to the Beatles, is there a connection between the group's name and Yoko Ono's book being entitled Grapefruit?
  7:25pm
uptownjen:

As someone that loves tiny special elements in songs, this song especially is one good thing after another…a gift that keeps on giving every time I hear it.
Avatar 7:25pm
sw2442:

Andrew...I know Grapefruit was the first group/artist signed to The Beatles' Apple Publishing, and that their record label, at least in this country, was Mercury, and RCA in the U.K. It still puzzles me why Grapefruit didn't wind up on Apple Records later on?
Avatar 7:26pm
cometothesunshine:

John Lennon suggested the name.
Avatar 7:26pm
cometothesunshine:

Obviously Yoko's book was the catalyst for that.
Avatar 7:27pm
David in California:

Thank you, Andrew. That explains it.
Avatar 7:28pm
cometothesunshine:

SW2442 - The Apple label was not really setup until the summer of 1968. Whereas Grapefruit launched in January 1968. Their sessions were paid for by Apple publishing, but subsequently Apple has given all of the masters back to the group.
Avatar 7:29pm
cometothesunshine:

After 1968, Apple decided they would rather not advance the group any more money. They were on their own for 1969 (signing with RCA worldwide) and then a final single in 1971 (which was George Alexander with Harry Vanada & George Young of the Easybeats)
  7:29pm
Carmelita:

Andrew I like your version of Round Going Round better than the original!
Avatar 7:30pm
cometothesunshine:

Vanda & Young also tried to sign with Apple, but were not contractually free to do so. They began writing under the pseudonym of "James" to get around their Australian deal.
Avatar 7:30pm
cometothesunshine:

Thank you, Carmelita! I am partial to the original, but I had a lot of fun recording and rearranging that.
Avatar 7:31pm
sw2442:

Thanks Andrew...it sounds like Apple maybe was considering having Grapefruit on their record label, but maybe lost interest right before Apple Records was formed.
Avatar 7:32pm
cometothesunshine:

Yes, they had two chart singles, but not big ones.
Avatar 7:32pm
cometothesunshine:

Paul McCartney thought they were stupid for making Elevator/Yes a Double A-side. As a result, the record never charted. He directed a promo film for Elevator which has yet to surface.
Avatar 7:34pm
cometothesunshine:

Grapefruit also mostly self-produced their records in 1968, which is impressive.
Avatar 7:35pm
cometothesunshine:

I love these outtakes! Some of the best lost 60s material to my ears.
Avatar 7:37pm
sw2442:

Also, thanks Andrew for the George Young and Harry Vanda info about them trying to sign with Apple. Kinda related, I read before that The Beach Boys tried to sign with Apple in either 1971 or 72...is that true or just an urban legend?
Avatar 7:38pm
cometothesunshine:

Never heard that about the BB, SW
Avatar 7:39pm
cometothesunshine:

CSN tried to sign with Apple too, but they passed. They were making demos in a flat on Moscow Rd in London When they departed, George Young took over the flat and the studio. He and Harry Vanda recorded there for much of 1969 & 1970.
Avatar 7:40pm
cometothesunshine:

The distinctive brass sounds on all the Grapefruit and Easybeats recordings were played by George Alexander.
Avatar 7:41pm
cometothesunshine:

The single version of Round Going Round is better than the LP. But it was not a hit!
Avatar 7:41pm
sw2442:

Thanks Andrew...I read The Beach Boys to Apple Records thing in a day by day book about The Beach Boys, and it was attributed to a mention in Melody Makerat the time...the CSN story I had definetly heard before.
Avatar 7:42pm
cometothesunshine:

The CSN/Easybeats connection is a strange one.
Avatar 7:45pm
cometothesunshine:

Somebody's Turning On The People seems like it could have been a hit
Avatar 7:46pm

Hi Andrew and all, looks like missed a George Alexander extravaganza! Been busy and couldn't listen tonight until now.

Trying To Make It To Monday - what an amazing song

I am guessing Bill Shepherd did the wonderful orch arrangement for the BBC live version.
Avatar 8:00pm
WLSClark:

Hi Mom! LOVE Grapefruit!
Avatar 8:06pm
cometothesunshine:

I guess this song was being demoed for a female singer - George is really straining to be at the top of his range.
  8:07pm
uptownjen:

This song reminds me of a Brian Wilson song, for some reason.
Avatar 8:08pm
cometothesunshine:

it is definitely intriguing

Avatar 8:09pm
WLSClark:

Very interesting accent on this classic Gfruit song!
  8:10pm
uptownjen:

Glad they went another way with it. I love 60s ska/reggae, but the direction they went with it is much more dramatic and compelling.
Avatar 8:11pm
cometothesunshine:

Jen - I am wonder who was singing on those demos, because it is so effected - you can't hear George's strong Scottish accent.
Avatar 8:12pm
cometothesunshine:

They are of course billed as George Alexander on the various Apple publishing compilations, but I wonder if there is some other story.
Avatar 8:15pm
cometothesunshine:

Same singer on this one, The Fall Of The Castle.
Avatar 8:20pm
WLSClark:

No demo for "yes"? I LOVE that Gfruit song--so Beatles-like.
Avatar 8:23pm
cometothesunshine:

Clark: I guess we'd have to ask John Perry - the only non-Alexander song on the first album.
  8:23pm
uptownjen:

This is so Sunflower-era Beach Boys to my ears.
Avatar 8:24pm
cometothesunshine:

Supposedly Bruce Johnston had something to do with arranging this Goldrush single, but he is not credited
Avatar 8:24pm
Erica:

I can hear it too Jen.
Avatar 8:24pm
cometothesunshine:

This Paintbox 45 is really growing on me - love hearing Vanda/Young on lead vocals.
Avatar 8:25pm
WLSClark:

Andrew, wow, never realized that!
Avatar 8:25pm
cometothesunshine:

George Alexander could still write a great song
  8:25pm
uptownjen:

Yeah, I dig this.
  8:26pm
uptownjen:

This is a bit of an Elton-esque production.
Avatar 8:27pm

This Majority single is so beautiful
Avatar 8:29pm
WLSClark:

George wrote so many cool tunes.
Avatar 8:29pm
cometothesunshine:

That is for certain, Clark!

This is the version marked FAB or listed as Produced by John & Paul (I wonder which John and which Paul)?

Love this “Say You Don’t Mind.” If I have heard it before, I don’t recall it.
Avatar 8:36pm

It has been issued on a BBC set - but it is a great version - the perfect song for Grapefruit

I’m loving song after song. I’m not surprised. This music is such a gift. Thank you for today’s set, Andrew.
