Nick Cave & Shane MacGowan | What A Wonderful World | B-Sides & Rarities | Mute | 2005 | "What A Wonderful World" was written by Bob Thiele and George Weiss. Thiele was a producer for ABC Records, which had recently signed Louis Armstrong, who was the first to record this song. It was recorded in Las Vegas on April 16, 1967 after Armstrong played a midnight show at the Tropicana. It was recorded live with the orchestra at a session that took place at United Recording Studio and lasted from 2-6 a.m. Along with the odd hour, there were some other challenges as well. Artie Butler, who did the arrangement, recalled trains passing by in the middle of takes & remembers he and Louis "laughing out loud till it hurt," Butler wrote. "We actually hung on to each other to keep from falling over from laughter." In America, this song was little heard when it was first released in 1967. That's because Larry Newton, head of ABC Records, hated the song and refused to promote it. Newton was looking for an uptempo follow-up to Armstrong's hit "Hello, Dolly!" and the lilting "What A Wonderful World" was not what he had in mind. Various accounts have him showing up at the recording session and trying to stop it, only to be locked out of the studio. | 2:48:58 (Pop-up)
The High Numbers (AKA The Who) | Here 'Tis | Thirty Years of Maximum R&B | MCA | 1994 | 4-cd set includes 14 previously unreleased tracks, 14 live performances, other Who rarities, commercials, stage and studio dialogue plus a rare glimpse into life with the Moons / song orig recorded in 1964 / For just a few months in 1964 (approximately July to October), The Who changed their name to the High Numbers, releasing one single (Zoot Suit/I'm The Face) under that billing before reverting to The Who. | 2:51:50 (Pop-up)

I am now reminded of your poetry and the poems you share, which would be a great addition to the "curriculum" I am compiling for acquaintances I am teaching :)) (asking for your permission in advance to use the ones that are yours ofc )

That is very kind of you
but no.
Don’t use them.
Instead,
it would be best to
let whatever I write fade
like a dream
and then the memory of it.

I’d like
someday
to know how you build you playlists.
Do I picture Carol Crow at her desk
in the dark night
coffee and cigarettes
compiling the perfect list of music
using a calculator, protractor and compass
to fit perfectly within the allotted time?

Do I imagine Carol
dashing around stacks of LPs
in the WFMU basement
plucking at random sleeves and covers
allowing the kismet forces of the universe
to provide the music of the day.

I'm a Whofreak - & a former girlfriend was a Nick Cave fanatic. So, hard not to interpret alternating them as a dialogue like that for me... Always glad to hear my lads, nonetheless.

what a wonderful moment this was, a crucial respite in this trans-dimensional bubble with all of you, from the rest of the horror show that is life on this earth. Thanks a million!
(and hey! we got (part of) the answer for her amazing creative mind !)
