thanks! basically administrative/office work, advocacy, social worker-y stuff . . . but have not been able to do any volunteer work either . . . thankfully, though, finally heard from a DOL division -- no real high hopes (i am usually better off doing like ngh is doing!) -- but may help with resume stuff etc. (although there too -- bc i am "old," AARP has much more current and useful information/resources)

my observation is that the best advocates/counselors/etc. are those who have been in similar situations -- substance abuse, survivors of trafficking, DV, sexual assault, etc., veterans experiencing PTSD, etc. -- a lot of the social workers may have advanced degrees and such, which is great -- but they have NO idea what it is like to have experienced *whatever*
some of the social work type jobs at The Innocence Project describe the reentry process, and how to advocate and support those who are coming out of prison after being exonerated -- and this process is frighteningly similar to that for those who are coming out of DV situations and trafficking

i would ask if it was possible for FEBO to have attended those meetings for you -- but i already know the answer 😹😻
Phillippe:
slugluv1313:
navigating these systems/bureaucracies can be incredibly difficult, even for those who are fluent in English, and without any physical and/or mental issues -- it kills me to know how many are deemed "ineligible" for supports, benefits, etc., simply because they are not able to fully comprehend the application process

i was a work-study kid my last two years at school -- in the financial aid office -- and even then, the Director, counselors, etc. all recognized how, if an applicant deliberately falsified information, that was considered "wrong" -- but it was not considered wrong if an applicant made mistakes that made them ineligible, OR those who would be eligible for some sort of financial aid, but just did not know that it was available
