This Blakey record was recorded in '61 but not released until '64. Maybe Blue Note was afraid to put out something with such an uncompromising title? If so, fuck you Blue Note. (Sorry, it had to be said.) Of course, there could have been another reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am

I miss-heard hear her, I thought she said "Did you SHIT on something?" I was perplexed and annoyed and told her so. Says Ophelia, deep in the weeds, "There’s rue for you, and here’s some for me; we may call it herb of grace o’ Sundays," adding, to Gertrude, "You must wear your rue with a difference." In the scene, it strikes me now, "rue" echoes with "true." Nevertheless I prefer my roux with an x.

Listener Gregory:

Is "I will do the shing-a-ling with you" a promise or a threat?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am
Doug Schulkind:

I'm willing to bet that there are Zodiac-inspired shing-a-lings out there.
Avatar 11:11am
Listener Gregory:

God, no.

If two people are dancing the shing-a-ling, is that shing-a-lings or shings-a-ling?

I'm more of a ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong fellow myself.

On a completely unrelated note, this entry from Wikipedia:

"Shing-a-ling is a Filipino snack made from dried thick egg noodles locally known as pancit miki that is deep-fried and dusted with garlic, chili, and beef powder. It can also be eaten as is with a vinegar-based dip, or dusted in sugar. Some commercial versions directly fry wheat dough. It has a distinctive shape that resembles green beans."

I will take a guess here, that this is going to be the best set of the holiday weekend.

I think the question of how to pluralize "shing-a-ling" hinges on the issue of whether it is a type of shing or a type of ling. Of course, experts debate this issue to this day, and it is doubtful there will ever be a definitive answer.

Funny that the basic bass line to this track "Loosen Up" is taken from Archie Bell and & the Drells' "Tighten Up."
