"You kids call that music?"
Avatar 3:22pm
Erica:

Funny how back then, older people thought 60s music sounded like trash. Nowadays we have autotune and pop singers who can't sing or they show too much skin.
Avatar 3:23pm
Erica:

I meant when 60s music was new btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Brian!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Brian in UK:

Erica, older people or some at least did have great songwriters from the Thirties/Forties to compare with those long hairs. Think it was appearance as much as musical quality.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Brian in UK:

Newhart's timing was spot on.
Avatar 3:28pm
Erica:

@Brian we've sure come a long way in the music industry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm

Newhart had only done actual standup once or twice when they recorded his first album

Loving this set ❤️❤️ As a kid in the '70s in the SF Bay Area, I used to hear a lot of these records on KSFO's Comedy Hour - every weeknight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Funky16Corners:

I wish we had something like that in the East, though I suspect that WBAI probably did something along those lines
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Michael 98145:

Great to be reminded of all these greats
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm
Funky16Corners:

Bob and Ray did so many variations of this bit, always giving away hilariously useless gifts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm
Jeff Ash:

Jean Carroll, great comedian, long forgotten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yes! Jean Carroll was HUGELY influential, way ahead of her time in style and substance. A popular female standup who is all but forgotten today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
Funky16Corners:

This is from her only album, from 1960
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Michael 98145:

Sadly never heard of her before now -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

The only place you're likely to run into her today is on the reruns of the Ed Sullivan show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
Michael 98145:

"Freberg is also known for his affinity with the radio platform, stating that it is a special medium capable of stretching the imagination more than television"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Funky16Corners:

He worked extensively in advertising, radio and TV

That remark about the Greyhound is a reaction to an actual piece of art
  3:46pm
AS from MP:

My mother bought those two featured Robert Klein albums when I was in HS, early-mid 70's. My brother and I played them repeatedly, learned the bits inside-out. The funny but frequently unfortunate thing is, his topics and messages can still be so relevant today. He had some great HBO specials, and had major role on Sisters on NBC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi AS from MP! Remember listening to comedy albums with friends?

I was amazed that Joyce Grenfell was released on Elektra. So very English.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Brian in UK:

I have no trouble at all finding Bill Cosby's monologues funny; despite all that has gone on. Funny is funny.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Brian in UK:

Funny is funny unless it is nasty or malicious. Swearing generally demeans humour in my opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

Everything in moderation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm

It is very difficult to watch or listen to the absolutely hypocritical and sanctimonious "Cos," and try to separate his material from his loathsome actions and transgressions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Funky16Corners:

I agree. Cosby even made one of my favorite funk 45s and I have not been able to listen to it since all of his misdeeds came to light

Michael McKean doing a pretty good Curtis Mayfield imitation

Jean Carroll also interesting/important for working NY Jewish culture into her routines, much like Alan King and Allan Sherman. Probably familiar to people from the area, probably alien to people in the midwest
