@richthegreeb - i read a story that said the searchers created that sound using 6 strings but the sounds inspired Mcguinn who reproduced it with the 12 string. Echo in the Canyon has Mcguinn talking about Bells of Rhymney and the 12 string sound. Totally worth checking out, if Dylan the younger is kinda annoying.

I saw McGuinn many years ago. Solo show. His singing and playing were (of course) fantastic and his between song commentary was interesting, totally engaging and thoroughly charming. He’s a real treasure. There are a few CDs out there of his solo shows. Well worth trying to track down.

As Pseu mentioned earlier, there's nothing wrong with enjoying R.E.M. and the Birthday Party. The list could go on and on. If you are so rigid in your tastes, you might just have a problem. :)
