hiya Dean! I didn't know that!
Avatar 11:15pm

Well, as George observed - everybody was trying to relate their trip to TheBeatles. They were everybody's focus @ the time. & John naturally was succinct : What does music have to do with stabbing people ?? ...Worse for Dennis Wilson & Terry Melcher...
Monkees did some real characteristic L.A. Psych gawshdsrnit. Mike was in AbbeyRoad for some of Sgt.Pepper ...they saw Hendrix @ the closest range ...more than most can say.

You saw pictures of what? Of "Helter Skelter" inscribed in blood? Sure. But it wasn't a feature of Bugliosi's theory that Manson wanted to trigger a race war. He made that shit up.

Donovan? He gets big love, always and forever. He is not underrated. We have always (and often) loved him. That you're not seeing billboards featuring him in your neighborhood doesn't mean he isn't wildly appreciated.

it is like my friend who had not heard of Sparks. If you associate with heavy music people you think everyone knows more than they do
Avatar 11:48pm
Julie:

I'm sure Don gets played on classic rock radio but it's probably the same four songs
  11:48pm
Dean:

I disagree. This is an empirical enquiry, and so I can't prove my point, but most people (?) my age are very well aware of his achievements.

Knowing two or three of anybody's songs from past generations is quite a difficult criterion. How many people know two or three Bacharach tunes? Not many. Yet he gets lots of love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Aitch:

Play them Sparks' Whippings and Apologies.
Plenty rock on that one!
Avatar 11:49pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Aside from merits / innovations - Donovan was certainly getting major Hits from what - 1965-1969 ? I don't think he ever feared not having a career... Think he got typed as slight & locked in Psychedelic idealism & tweeness... Love he sings backup / counterpoint on Billion Dollar Babies :D ...
Perhaps he had his influence - & others like Syd & Bolan supplanted him in people's heads...
Avatar 11:51pm
Julie:

But you'd have a hard time finding anyone who knows he recorded anything past 1970. I did not grow up with Donovan's hits, he was old news by the time I was old enough to buy records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
Aitch:

I read people thought he was like a poor-man's Dylan, but I never got that.
And Donovan sounds lovely, Dylan I'd much rather read.
Avatar 11:52pm
Julie:

I can't even recall HOW or even when I got into him.. I had the little 2 cd compilation in the 90s I guess it was. He jokes how he was called the English Bob Dylan but in fact he was the Scottish Woody Guthrie. The first couple albums are dylan-esque and the least interesting to me because of it.
Avatar 11:52pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...wonder what he felt about not being in the Charts then - did he drop out ? It's like the asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs - the 1970 boundary when Hendrix died & TheBealtes split...
Avatar 11:54pm
Julie:

He didn't stop recording I don't think... Cosmic Wheels in 73 was kinda T-Rex-ish in parts.
  11:55pm
Dean:

Uhm, Beethoven was old news by the time I was old enough...

But it seems you're disappointed with the lagging attention to Donovan's discography, which is what counts for "attention"? Again, Beethoven. Very, very few people care about the stream of new releases. But is he underrated by virtue of that circumstance? I don't think so.
Avatar 11:56pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Older brother had the 45 of Sunshine Superman / The Trip - when I was two or something. On heard his Hits then & for years to come. He was not obscure. Also ...I like his pre-LSD stuff just fine. But I like Folk... Found 'Cosmic Wheels' on cassette used - in bad shape as tapes often were ...so I didn't have it long! Fine album.

There was a whole thing - he's ripping Dylan - then he's a twee Psychedelic insubstantial artist. Like Zappa mocked him sometimes. As he did. So to me - it's about crediting him with getting past Genres super early - blending Folk & Rawk & Jazz & International things without a care @ all. & I always liked it. Think he's great & relevant. As did John Lennon for instance... & that kind of credit for Donovan is a little lacking...
