Izzit heresy?
When Devo came along, I didn't think they were very interesting or sharply new or cool. They seemed -- almost in the manner of KISS -- to be taking some categories of what was already out there and, musically and visually, being more bluntly style-pose-ish for attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Gary:

Still b/p! Well, they completely blew my kid mind when I heard them, I remember that version of Satisfaction being very different from anything I'd heard at that time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm
Gary:

And I say that as someone whose first concert was, in fact, KISS :)
Avatar 🇰🇷 7:53pm
Listener Gregory:

Devo was more robotic kitsch than a real innovation, and the irony was part of the charm (to the degree there was any).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Gary:

I admittedly didn't connect with the subsequent albums, tho

Erik! Hey, great to see you, man -- what are you up to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
StringOFperils:

They were art school kids, out to break all the statues. And they WERE posing for attention, while pointing at their own inability to rise above the culture they found themselves in that seemed hopelessly stupid, to the point it was hilarious in a lunatic laughter kind of way. 'Duty Now, For the Future!'

Right, Residents' Satisfaction was was originally a single backed with Losers≠Weed
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:01pm

You are correct, sir. I just recently read a reference to that. Koons painted hyper-realistic scenes of him and Cicciolina having sex, for reasons that have never been entirely clear.

I saw some of these paintings at a big Koons show, and they made very little sense mixed in with his giant porcelains of Mickey Mouse, Michael Jackson, and various childhood figurines. I didn't get no satisfaction from the show, to be honest.

I saw Jeff Koons porn series at a Tate retrospective; I was surprised at how large those photographs are, but I guess that's as just another aspect of commercialism that he was reflecting, making them into billboards. Screamingly bland.

Inkjet painting is a method of reproducing photographs/images at a large scale, using computer-driven spray jets, laying down pigment in passes....like a giant industrial version of a printer attached to a home computer
  8:26pm
ErikB:

Gary. . . they're talking in German.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Gary:

Ja?
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:27pm
Listener Gregory:

Yes, but is Koons's painting just a reproduction of his processed photograph, or was there some actual painting (application of color or pigment by hand) involved at some point? If the whole thing is just photoshopped pictures of him and his wife, then it is even less interesting to me. I know I am a Philistine. Don't try to cure me now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
StringOFperils:

Yes, they are altered digitally, like on a Mac. Sort of like Pierre et Gilles, for instance. Rosy cheeks like a tacky ceramic Hummell figurine, stuff like that....to elevate it to a kitsch fantasy, like a painting of Jesus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
StringOFperils:

Possibly the ahem sexual apparatus was also enhanced. It was porn after all.
Avatar 🇰🇷 8:33pm

It is mentioned that Koons's face never appears in pictures with the "sexual apparatus," making people wonder if it is even him. OK, I'm done with this topic, I promise.

@chresti, I believe a German conceptual artist has one version that is performed on church bells in Dresden that will take 10,000 years to complete. Each year one more note is played. All the repeats are honored.

Not quite 'Last Time' riff to my ears - but sounds like it without Fuzz... Satisfaction riff is straight up & down pitchwise... But related I think yer right. 'Last Time' of course owes massively to the Staples - & probly goes back before that...
