MarkTime (vintage radio airchecks), and Krys O (aka Sister Krys - WFMU alumna 1985-1991, longtime Church of the Subgenius monk. Playing cinematic ephemera, schizoid weirdos, all styles served here). Plus: surprise guests galore. (illustration courtesy of https://www.jimflora.com/)

Good Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Krys O.:

Hey! I'm looking forward to this episode. It's right up my alley as a native New Yorker who grew up in the 70s.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. Mark usually finds very cool airchecks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm

G'day Mark & Wigglers!

Ooh this looks good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

Oh, this sends me back. My parents loved Dan Ingram too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm
Feldy:

I love 70's radio. Hey Scott!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:03pm
Austin Rich:

That was a slightly rocky start, but I think we're flying well now! Hopefully that didn't sound too rough?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

My parents used to sing, "Living Room!" when Dan Ingram's promos came on. :)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
Austin Rich:

That's awesome.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:07pm
Austin Rich:

I'm not sure if Mark is around today, but I'm running the show / chat this hour. Nice to see ya'll, Krys O, Scott67, Kat In Chicago, and Feldy! A nice chat group if I ever have to pick one by hand.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Austin Rich:

Do I need to post the songs in the chat as these checks play?

Love Her Madly - The Doors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Krys O.:

In the summertime, Dan would sporadically jump into a song to say "Roll your bod, Roll your bod." This was supposed to help one get a tan and avoid sunburn at the beach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Kat in Chicago:

Thanks for bringing us the show, Austin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Krys O.:

Thanks, Austin. Whatever you feel comfortable with.

Tanning Help from Mr. Ingram! I love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

Haha Krys, I'm imagining a beach full of people doing that with their radios on

The WABC reverb.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Austin Rich:

I know it's easier said than done, but Mark has talked about having piles of airchecks... enough that he could go weekly, if he could.

Certainly, he's got fans... but I'm sure the once a month is a very manageable schedule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
Krys O.:

Pinto!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
W Trenton Vinny:

lol, that was amazing
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Austin Rich:

I was gonna comment on the reverb. I have a book on radio, where they were talking about WABC having a lot of reverb on it. Was it always this thick? I sort of thought that was an artifact of the age of the aircheck.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm

Soul Power (Part 1) - James Brown

Yup, it was there signature sound.

their
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

It's very distinctive! I should look for more airchecks, because it's pretty fascinating. I can't imagine a station doing that now.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Austin Rich:

(Except as an experimental performance sort of thing.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm

I'm coming onto the scene in about 2 months from then...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

More commercial radio needs to have a James Brown requirement.

Howdy, Mr. X! We're dancing and wigglin' this hour...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Austin Rich:

Hello, W Trenton Vinny! I missed you earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

Kat in Chicago:

Me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
W Trenton Vinny:

Hello!
Avatar 8:22pm
Mr. X:

I remember in the 7th grade, our math teacher thought he was doing us a solid by playing records in class during our math quiz. I couldn't concentrate on my test! This Osmond Bros album was his pick for that day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Krys O.:

Oof, Mr. X
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Austin Rich:

Oh no! You seem to have made out okay, in spite of not passing that 7th grade quiz. And, knowing that album seems like a good trade off.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Austin Rich:

Help Me Make It Through The Night - Sammi Smith
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Austin Rich:

Country, Soul, Funk, Rock and Roll... and that Pinto ad. I do like the variety of WABC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
W Trenton Vinny:

the improved commercial bit about eating chicken raw was special
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. I'm thinking about cutting that sample out for use elsewhere... that was priceless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
W Trenton Vinny:

from A&P of course
Avatar 8:25pm
Mr. X:

The DJ goofing off about the ribbon in the intro to this song was also stellar.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

The Holidays? It's March fifth, Dan.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:27pm

You can tell it's the East Coast. Duncan Donuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
Krys O.:

Easter and Passover were around the corner.
Avatar 8:28pm
Mr. X:

His sense of humor seems somewhat influenced by Wolfman Jack. Or was it the other way around?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Kat in Chicago:

Did Dunkin' Donuts always taste like frosted cardboard? I can't remember.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:28pm

She was singular. I still need to watch Xanadu again. (It's one of Marla's fave movies.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
Krys O.:

The 70s oldies station in NYC used to have classic NY deejay reunions. Jack Spector used to show up. It was a fine show with great memories.

Avatar 👻 8:37pm

Hello all! Another one of those days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Krys O.:

I recall him sounding differently than this. He was also a gifted mimic who did not stammer when he did an imitation or when he sang.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Austin Rich:

Mark! Great to see you in the chat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Krys O.:

Hey, MarkTime! Enjoying this episode. I remember Dan Ingram from my childhood.
Avatar 8:39pm
Mr. X:

1974 growing up in Coos Bay: We only tuned in to the country station, KBBR, because they had a community trading post show, where you could pick up used furniture and appliance for super cheap - which we needed for our new home. That has been pretty much my only exposure to country music radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
W Trenton Vinny:

@Krys O.; Finast was a NE grocer, ya?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm

Tonight Someone's Fallin' In Love (?) Shazam doesn't know!

There was a community trading post show on the radio in Cottage Grove, too! Also a country station. I wonder if they still have that show... my mom listened regularly.
Avatar 👻 8:40pm

Me sad ... I could not find a photo of Jack Spector from his WHN days, so I picked the next best thing. Little did I know just a week later ... RIP Olivia
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:40pm

Krys O, with all the obscure country gems! Thanks!

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Austin Rich:

I worry about crashing BUTT, and then we can't shake our butts anymore.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Austin Rich:

Who doesn't love those Roma Wine ads?
Avatar 👻 8:43pm
MarkTime:

Roma ... ah, a big sponsor on Suspense. And Household Finance, such nice ads but such a sucky predatory company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Kat in Chicago:

oh thank gawd we didn't have to hear more John Denver than that
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
Austin Rich:

I'm thinking about adding "Suspense" to my "Dimestore Radio Theater" show. I need a good horror show, and Suspense is pretty good in that department.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:45pm
Austin Rich:

A little Denver goes a long way.
Avatar 👻 8:45pm
MarkTime:

My brother in law would want me to play a full hour of John Denver
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Krys O.:

I liked John Denver when I was 5 or 6.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Austin Rich:

Strangers In The Night - Frank Sinatra
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
Kat in Chicago:

I liked John Denver in junior high, but not for long
Avatar 8:47pm
Mr. X:

Someone at House of Records used to play Frank Sinatra in the store all the time.
Avatar 👻 8:47pm
MarkTime:

WNBC was always an odd station, trying to squeeze in between the hits on WABC and the Great American Songbook of WNEW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
W Trenton Vinny:

John Denver always reminded me of an adult version of the Brady Bunch's little cousin with the blonde hair and glasses... don't recall actor or character's name
Avatar 👻 8:48pm
MarkTime:

Oliver is all I recall
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Krys O.:

I learned a lot from listening to my older brother's albums. He is 7 years older than me. I had to learn how to put the records back in the sleeve properly so he couldn't tell that I was listening to his albums.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Austin Rich:

I wonder if it was Robert from Oswald 5-0? He worked at House of Records, often spoke of wanting to bring back the style of Sinatra and "Grandpa Fashion," and he was often in charge of the stereo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Krys O.:

Robbie Rist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
W Trenton Vinny:

Oliver! Thank you!
Avatar 👻 8:49pm
MarkTime:

Darn Drats ... another family distraction. See you all again soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Krys O.:

Robbie Rist has been involved in music for a long time now.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Austin Rich:

(Another Shazam fail... is this one Robbie Rist?)
Avatar 8:50pm
Mr. X:

@Austin: Yeah, that's the guy. Always a shock to shop for punk rock with Sinatra in the background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm
Krys O.:

Thanks again, MarkTime.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Austin Rich:

Robert was great! (Now passed, RIP.) His band was amazing, and he turned me onto all sorts of stuff. And he invented the phrase, "Grandpa Punk," which led to me wearing more fedoras and suits at shows, too. What a great dude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Kat in Chicago:

I remember this being sort of a hit but damned if I remember the artist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm
Krys O.:

Sister Janet Mead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Kat in Chicago:

I think that's it, Krys!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
Austin Rich:

She's Not There - The Zombies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Kat in Chicago:

I hadn't yet rejected Catholicism when that came out and it still made me cringe
Avatar 8:53pm
Mr. X:

The Zombies were awesome in every way.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Austin Rich:

Catholic, even! I was raised by hippies and The Rockford Files.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Austin Rich:

The Zombies are underrated.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Austin Rich:

(Shazam Fail! Anyone know this one?)
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Austin Rich:

The Happening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Krys O.:

I didn't go to Catholic school, but we had catechism twice a week after school. Awful nuns. Deplorable even.

I still love the Zombies.

I just learned that Frank Devol arranged this Supremes song, The Happening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Kat in Chicago:

Diana Ross & The Supremes - The Happening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm
Krys O.:

It sounds slowed down a wee bit.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Austin Rich:

Maybe that's why Shazam can't get it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Kat in Chicago:

It kinda does
Avatar 8:56pm
Mr. X:

There were a few versions of The Happening.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Austin Rich:

The Zombies also seemed off to my ear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Kat in Chicago:

I thought they were more likely to pitch songs up a bit
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Austin Rich:

(Speed-wise.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
Kat in Chicago:

To cram more of them in
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Austin Rich:

Usually... but I wonder if the tape is off? (At the wrong speed?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Kat in Chicago:

That's likely, Austin
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Austin Rich:

(If it was captured with a reel-to-reel, it's likely the speed could have bee adjusted wrong, etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Krys O.:

Loved the Zombies and really got into them in the late 80s. Colin Blunstone's voice was very airy.

Did you ever see Bunny Lake is Missing, a film by Otto Preminger with Keir Dullea? Zombies pop up in the background.
