	1:30pm coelacanth∅: Mr. Oxford oh ukulele's great! -though this coming from one who thinks ALL instruments can be coerced into producing something good. ...i am partial to string instruments, however. (except the harpsichord!)
	1:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Thing is they're using ukes to sound 'cute' in advertising & elsewhere in a cloying way ...much as banjo got jacked to represent being 'down home' in such contexts ...leaves me feeling - yer a great big grownup - you can have a gittar now ...also they tuned different & I don't play 'em so just resentful. :D

	1:40pm Mr. Oxford: @Revolution Rabbit Nov63, I agree with you. Having played guitar for many years, I wanted to experience learning a new string instrument. The reasons you mentioned were exactly why I did not want to take up the ukulele. But then I discovered traditional Hawaiian music which used the instrument in a humble way. There was also this picture of Joe Strummer playing one which got to me. So I got one and have been enjoying playing it for a month or so now. As @Coelacanth∅ mentioned, definitely some good can come from any instrument. I'm finding jazz and funk easier to play on the uke than on the guitar. It's just a different playing experience.

	1:41pm Mr. Oxford: Oh yes! Os Novos Baianos! That's one of my go to Brazilian music bands. I love that era of late 60s/early70s music from the region.
	1:42pm coelacanth∅: RR i didn't know that, but it makes sense now -'explains the disdain; but i haven't been exposed to that, luckily. spodi i can like it! but usually i don't. same with alto saxophone -though there are hundreds of examples of liking it (Trane, Ornette...) where as i've possibly only enjoyed harpsichord a handful of times.

It's a distinct & evocative timbre obviously - but I suppose I can see a real large dose of it (Sonatas maybe) grating like clatter if one were so disposed towards the texture...
	1:49pm Mr. Oxford: @Irene Trudel, loads of Magnetic Fields songs use ukuleles. Especially ones from 69 Love Songs such as "The Sun Goes Down and the World Goes Dancing", "Kiss Me Like You Mean It", etc. They also had a song called "This Little Ukulele"

	1:53pm coelacanth∅: i like the way Tori Amos has used a harpsichord, but loathe the way Bjork did! ...for example. so, i guess there are more than a handful of positive harpsichord experiences, just between Tori's songs and a few classical pieces i like.
	1:54pm adamdoesit: Conductor Sir Thomas Beecham famously likened the sound of a harpsichord to that of "two skeletons copulating on a tin roof in a thunderstorm." Maybe he saw that in a movie.

	2:12pm adamdoesit: There's tack piano, a piano with thumbtacks driven into its hammers, giving a harpsichord-like sound. Abdullah Ibrahim plays it to great effect…
	2:12pm coelacanth∅: i used the strings of a grand piano just for a drone -propping the sustain pedal down, playing a hand drum across the room with the recorder an inch away from the piano strings that that drum would mostly affect. it's subtle but i'm happy with it.

	2:39pm doctorjazz: I saw Ross with Blake as well, at the Vanguard, a while back, also really impressed me. Kris's Davis was on piano, didn't know much about her at the time, also knocked me out.

	1:40pm Mr. Oxford: @Revolution Rabbit Nov63, I agree with you. Having played guitar for many years, I wanted to experience learning a new string instrument. The reasons you mentioned were exactly why I did not want to take up the ukulele. But then I discovered traditional Hawaiian music which used the instrument in a humble way. There was also this picture of Joe Strummer playing one which got to me. So I got one and have been enjoying playing it for a month or so now. As @Coelacanth∅ mentioned, definitely some good can come from any instrument. I'm finding jazz and funk easier to play on the uke than on the guitar. It's just a different playing experience.
