What is an example of someone actually successfully "selling out"?

I can really think of one — in the pure sense of "We're a completely outside of the mainstream artist who is now tossing that aside to make a sure-fire mainstream hit (completely different from any of our prior work) that will bring in truckloads of cash".

And then the truckloads of cash actually happened.

Not sure what the hit-rate was for major musicians reading something in a magazine/book and deciding to make an album off of it.

Another example of that concept involves David Lee Roth rerecording Eat Em And Smile in Spanish after his bassist read an article about half of Mexico's population being between 18-27. It went over as well as you'd think.

PB an interesting subject. i never thought of Clapton as "selling out" but more as someone with limited creativity, that shined when faced with the prospect of someone else out-shining him.
so, i think he was great -when competing with John Mayall, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Duane Allman, Steve Winwood. these truly extraordinary musicians brought out his best.

i don't know if he sold out, as much as he just profoundly sucked!

@TheButterman: Yeah! Totally! When I was a kid/teen me and friends simultaneously derided art school as a rich kid thing, yet saw stuff like Jarmusch films and record covers as cool.

Years later I realized what an utter learned disconnect that is!

When you are raised working class you just don’t see art as a viable world to be a part of. Until you step back and realize people who went to art school have created things all around you all the time.

"Sell out" was used a lot with 60's/70's "classic rock" artists that had top 40 hits in the 80's. But IMHO they were already commercially successful but then succumbed to the Bad 80's Music Disease. Heart, ZZ Top, Genesis/Phil Collins, etc. But pretty much every good artists went thru a poor 80's period. Some recovered (Bowie, Prince), others didn't....
