I can really think of one — in the pure sense of "We're a completely outside of the mainstream artist who is now tossing that aside to make a sure-fire mainstream hit (completely different from any of our prior work) that will bring in truckloads of cash".
And then the truckloads of cash actually happened.

Also, Madonna was a club kid who hit it big doing exactly what she did.
Also, Pixies on 4AD is not too much different than their later period work. What about the Breeders? Another band that exploded thanks to MTV but were on 4AD.
Sorry, but I can’t pretend that the Jandeks of the world count.

Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure had pop sound pivots. I recall Robert Smith explicitly saying the Cure would never grow a larger fanbase if they stayed in that whole doom and gloom sound of their early work.

Not sure what the hit-rate was for major musicians reading something in a magazine/book and deciding to make an album off of it.
Another example of that concept involves David Lee Roth rerecording Eat Em And Smile in Spanish after his bassist read an article about half of Mexico's population being between 18-27. It went over as well as you'd think.
