What's goin on, Jon!

This mashup works great, instantly improving upon Hall n Oates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm
postconsumer:

Hi Scott67! hi Mr. Fab!
There are a few mashups this episode, along with a lot more house and vaporwave than I usually play, but I really explored the outer reaches of my library to fulfill a theme...

Charles:

Loving this!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
Austin Rich:

"The Outer Reaches of My Library" feels like a good title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
postconsumer:

I think it's good, but I miss the cut-ups, I think (this episode), as well as the scratch djs, etc. Oh well, you can't represent everybody, every episode!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm
postconsumer:

Austin - that would be good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
Krys O.:

Lovely vibes with Kate in the mix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm

Austin, what do you know about vaporwave? since you're from the Pacific NW. I just discovered it for myself a few years ago, while taking some time off from my show. I believe it was created in 2011, right here in Portland, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
postconsumer:

That question goes out to anyone with input, of course. 😊
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Austin Rich:

Oh! Perhaps! It wasn't my scene, so I wasn't really following it. But I do recall that pretty quickly, it was everywhere. I guess I should dig into it... I wonder if i know any of the folks invovled?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
postconsumer:

I'm relatively new to it, but it reminds me how I felt when first hearing mashups... or maybe, just right after I'd been exposed to them. In that, my feeling (so far) is that there's a lot of stuff that's hard to take seriously, but there are quite a few artists doing really amazing things. I've been trying to learn more.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Austin Rich:

Certainly!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Austin Rich:

I was just thinking how I don't know much about this scene, but it is embracing so much of what I'm into... I should really dig in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
postconsumer:

yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
postconsumer:

Sometimes I'll review things from the early nineties and think, oh, that's still fairly new, and then I realize, no, that was three decades ago, dude. 😆

I'm doing emoticons today.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
Austin Rich:

Yeah. In my mind, the early 90's is still "High School," and is locked into my mind as "not that long ago." Whoops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
postconsumer:

yep. class of 92
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
Austin Rich:

I also realize how young I am, too. I think, "Oh, that was three decades ago..." But really, I'm just starting to get old thoughts, you know?
Avatar 👻 8:22pm
Mr Fab:

Well, the explosion of Hip-hop, electronica, and sampling did seem very modern, if not futuristic. A real break from past traditions. So yeah, i think of the '90s as the modern era, too.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Austin Rich:

In a way, the sampling / remixing revolution is still playing out, and is still having an impact, and I think the only comparable revolution since then has been in home recording.

But most everything else is just expanding on those same ideas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
postconsumer:

I look at my kid and think, he's 11... right now he hears about the 90s, and it's like when I looked back, as an 11-year old kid, on events of the 50s.

and yes, a lot of what I hear in modern pop music anyway is using musique concret techniques, in new ways, to create some incredibly listenable music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
postconsumer:

techniques and attitudes, anyway...
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Austin Rich:

I'm waiting for a revolution that seems as big as sampling, remixing, and the laptop as a recording tool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Scott67:

I'm beginning to feel I'm an unhealthy influence around here!😵‍💫

Krys O.:

It's important to know history. One of the saddest things I hear from young people is "That's before my time." A friend mentioned that one can say the entire scope of human history is 'before your time.'
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Austin Rich:

I find a lot of culture before my time very compelling. But I wonder if we are exceptions to the rule?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Krys O.:

I loved old movies since I was 6 or 7 years old. I could appreciate the music of my parents and my older siblings and so on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
postconsumer:

Oh, I'm glad you said something, Scott! I was sitting here really listening closely and LOVING that track (maybe even more than I did when I first played it), and thinking, 'man, I can't be the only one hearing this, am I?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
postconsumer:

I certainly grew up watching some older movies, and have made it a point to show my boy early film artists like Buster Keaton and Chaplin. we even watched some W.C. Fields shorts the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Krys O.:

Just like in our current times, there are different factions, trends, myriad cultures all around. The same applied to the past. Any decade or whatever measure of time wasn't just one thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm
Krys O.:

Ah, this is a classic ironically.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Austin Rich:

I'm sort of sad there aren't old movies I can "flip" past, and then stop to watch. That seems to be one things about loosing analog TV that was a joy: stumbling upon a cool old movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Krys O.:

Before I went back to cable about ten years ago, I would collect used VHS and DVDs to watch. Also watched the DTV tier using rabbit ear antennae.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
postconsumer:

my internet is going in and out, Krys. Which one were you referring to?

Now I'm willing to pay to watch TCM. I fill up my DVR and catch up on the weekends.

Just want to add that rigidity should be avoided. Open minds keep us loose.

Hey, Kat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Kat in Chicago:

Didn't Georgy do a vaporwave Aloha Friday?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
Austin Rich:

I should look into the TCM app. I don't have a DVR anymore, and we don't have any conventional TV anymore. Just apps. But I'm sure I can pay a little to watch TCM, which sounds like what I want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
