There's so much technique in Diamanda - this amazing handling of the instrument - with all these intense & conceptual intentions - yet such full-throttle unfiltered human affectation. It may be iconoclastic - but it's never cold !

In terms of politics, if we voted in large majorities of Democrats, at the state and federal level, a lot of good things could happen. As much as people want to criticize the democrats for what they have not done or been able to do, these are all Republican policies/votes/nominations from this radical supreme court to trying to kill obamacare, to rejecting most if not all gun control, limiting a woman's right to choose, limiting voting rights, rejecting environmental protection laws

I hate to admit it but I thought Diamanda was no longer with us

Saw her at St Thomas the Apostle (she played 2 nights there) and, back in the 90s, performing a piece called Insekta at The Kitchen in the West Village. She is an unbelievably good performer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Marie - we have Minority Rule. The Republicans fear Democracy above all, because they've known for ages that their Policies do not have Majority support whatsoever. The extent to whcich we are a (theoretical / legal) Republic - & not a Democracy - is being stretched to the limit - & perhaps beyond.
  7:49pm

P90, from your text to Her ears!
last saw her @ Murmurr Theatre on Halloween ( sadly venue changed from Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph)

Roberts will be known as the most inept SCCJ n history, worse than Taney, McReynolds, Field, though not all CJ. Love the new education voucher system being pushed by the right, ending the public school system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Dan Bodah:

This piece is based on a prison journal and is a critique of the American penal system
  7:55pm

I’m not an envious grrrl but truly envy those of you who’ve seen her early and/or often. Spiegeltent was my 1st show after pinning to see her my teen yrs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...one critical situation there: the Republicans therefore have no problem propagandizing & embracing extremist Populist Revolutions. While the Democratic Party still wants to appeal to a 'Center' that is - gone - in a political spectrum stretching off the rails to the Right - without constraints. That is - they fear to truly Represent the actual Left. Also the consideration that being Liberal by definition means tolerating more views - so our unequivocal Majority is harder to herd to the Polls - while the Right can just put out nutty Ideology & wave their flag & goose-step in line ...the Celts loved Spirals, & the Romans their Roads. Always a situation for those who *actualy* love Freedom - they resist Organization @ the level of the Opposition...

Hey RR63--I hear ya' on every point. And we have had institutionalized minority rule in the senate. And the republicans have gotten more and more radical.

Very well stated Rev Rabbit Nov 63.
Enjoyed the sets, info, Dan.
Thnx everyone for being & sharing in this space.
  8:05pm
Marie:

But I think a lot of people are not clear on how strong the differences between the parties have become. There is no equivocating. And in terms of Roberts, I despise him. He is truly strange, I believe, and he was gunning to weaken the voting rights law before he was even appointed. WTF
  8:08pm
Marie:

The Supreme Court damaged our politics greatly when they gave corporations the same rights as people, thus allowing for so much more money to come in to the system. The court really needs to be revised. With that, I gotta get back to my noodles--I prolly overcooked them @)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Marie - that speaks to the Spiral / Roads analogy I refer to. (I got that from JulianCope in fact.) The Democrats' problem is perhaps *knowing* they have a Majority of the People on their side ...& they can always get placed back in their jobs by being the 'loyal opposition' (as they say in Politics) : one step forward & two steps back Election after Election.

  8:18pm

Marie I agree with you, there is no equivocating . simultaneously the center Democrats need to know that we will leave them in large numbers for left of their left (in the voting booth & everywhere else) since they are not protecting us or the democratic experiment.

Enjoy those (hopefully not overcooked) noodles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's quite dangerous - because the Nazis were actually duly Elected - because too many Parties divided the Vote against them. & I don't know why in the USA we aren't talking about the DNC Chicago 1968 all the time! Because I think that's when the Democratic Party really got divided within itself & stalled out in standing up to the Right.
Avatar 8:24pm
arb:

this ones a deep fave <3
  8:26pm
Marie:

For what it's worth, the Dems have not had sufficient numbers at the federal level to make a lot of the changes they would like to, for a while now. The devil is in the details. And isn't it interesting how the repubs constantly label the dems as radical leftists--they know how to lie big (a key strategy in propaganda)--when they are way more radical.

As far as I know, there are no recordings of Diamanda's 1993 follow up to Vena Cava -- Insekta. I saw one of the few performances of this live at the Kitchen. Just found a pdf of the program from the show in The Kitchen Archives: archive.thekitchen.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

I have long wished there were an Insekta recording -- I felt it was a much more fully realized version the psychological disintegration she began working to evoke on Vena Cava.
