Don-O, one of the voices sampled in this week's intro was Mary Tyler Moore, saying "Uh, Yes!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm
Krys O.:

"I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone
I crashed my car into the bridge, I watched, I let it burn
I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs
I crashed my car into the bridge
I don't care, I love it
I don't care"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm

one of the spam messages?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm

It was a young female telemarketer who was having fun leaving a voice mail. Lots of vocal fry.

This is a major re-working of a piece I originally put together many years ago for an artist in Louisiana. A passage from James Joyce!

I recognize every 10th voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
postconsumer:

This is from the (2009?!) notes:
"Most of the (very nearly five hundred) words, which make up the bulk of this piece, were sought out one at a time, from film, television, radio and books on tape, and sometimes even syllable by syllable, to approximate as closely as possible, the spirit of Joyce's experimental novel.

It was an awful lot of work, more than I've ever devoted to a single track before, and I'm really very happy with how it turned out. Thanks to Heather Ryan Kelley for the inspiration!"

I worked with a guy who was a masterful break dancer. For fun he would lay the cardboard in the street in front of the store and do a bit. Always drew a crowd. We were in the heart of Greenwich Village.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Krys O.:

Ricky was a dj too.

Oh, it was the Crazy Eddie's Record store on the corner of 6th Avenue and 8th Street. I was a manager in the record and video store there around 1984-1987.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Feldy:

I haven't heard this in so long, and it's still impressive. Pump Up the Volume holds up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm
postconsumer:

I never really had much of a desire to travel much. If I could travel anywhere, I think it would have to be tied to a place in time, as well. No real desire to see NYC now, but in 1984? Yes, I'd travel there, then.
Avatar 👻 8:47pm
Mr Fab:

Did you visit NYC in the '80s, Jon? I did regularly - my fam is from there. Oh, I got stories (as I'm sure anyone does if they were there)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
postconsumer:

wish I'd said that earlier - I'd love to spend an hour hearing those stories (and Krys O's). I didn't get to NYC until 93. Never lived there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm
postconsumer:

Mr. Fab - you said recently you were listening to turntablists/DJs as a kid. What do you think of this Bits & Pieces series? I've been trying to find out more, online, and aside from Disco Patrick, there's really not much info, at all. I'm into these medleys, though... well, some much more than others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
Kat in Chicago:

I like these bitsn pieces
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm
postconsumer:

me, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
postconsumer:

Bits and Pieces 1-3 are more well known, or at least I was aware of them for a long time before I found out the series continued, unofficially or not, for about a decade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm
postconsumer:

From what I've read, these kinds of things were done on 4-track tape recorders, with razor blades and wax pencils. Any scratching is just added in, on tape.
Avatar 👻 8:56pm
Mr Fab:

Not familiar with this, but there was alot of stuff like that at the time. I'd haunt DJ shops for white labels and mix tapes, but it was all very underground, due to copyright issues. I'd tape mixes off the radio, having no idea who made them.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
Austin Rich:

I think the razor blade was pretty standard until somewhere nearly the second half of the 90's, when digital editing was possible. But I don't think a lot of people were able to really use digital editing in a big was until the early 2000's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

Thanks Jon! 🍻😎🤙
