Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from June 24, 2022 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Is Ain’t Misbehavin’ a show tune?
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
diciassette:

Ain't Misbehavin's a show! (named after the tune)

doctorjazz:

Been listening in the car, heading to hear some jazz in Brooklyn. Great show!
  7:57pm
Listener Gregory:

OK, but that was decades after its initial popularity. BB says it was part of a 20s musical.
  7:58pm
Listener Gregory:

“What Is This Thing” is one of the most popular songs adopted by jazz musicians.

WR:

Ain't Misbehaving originally was in a show called Connie's Hot Chocolates (as per the label on the record) which ran for 219 performances from June 20, 1929, to December 14, 1929 as per the Wikipedia page.

For 20s fans, Jan Turkenburg did an episode yesterday of all songs recorded in or associated with 1922.

Where's That Rainbow is a follow-up to Where's That Rainy Day, but it wasn't as popular.

@Listener Gregory, that comment evoked a chuckle here but accompanied with head turning side to side.

Correction: I am informed that I live alone, in the dark. But still, it was a happy tune.

WR:

Don't know these individual tunes but according to what was written in the playlist, Non-Stop Dancing had lyrics by P.G. Wodehouse. Didn't hear vocal. will check from the archive, always looking for new to me material from P.G. Wodehouse.

@WR: curious....

I don’t think that performance had a lyric.

The Ray Charles version of Makin' Whoopie is the best modern one, IMHO.

thank YOU darlings
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 9:02pm
WR:

Wait! Bronwyn took the lyrics credit out of the playlist.

diciassette, I honestly need to reassess what I've read and not read. A long long time ago had a couple of friends who were fans and pulled me in, but I've been a lapsed reader during this century.

Thank you Bronwyn! Many thanks for the new and old memories.

Listener Gregory, I like to have a version of Makin' Whoopie for all occasions, Ray Charles is at to the top of this list for sure.
