for one of my high school English classes, we all had to select something to read in front of the class -- i chose to read "The Gift" (i had to play the record over and over again to get all the words -- no lyric sheet, and certainly no internet to look up lyrics in the 70s) -- i was the terribly shy quiet kid, always in the back of the class (often simply bc my last name begins with "Z") -- when i looked up after finishing, dead silence and gaping mouths and looks of horror, even the teacher -- this made me happy :)

the Velvets were definitely not well known back then -- finding their records was extremely difficult -- but thankfully the local library had a bunch of their LPs
