i could never shake the idea that he wasn't being fully himself.
...only referring to the earliest recordings.

i completely agree with these points made against the idea of Donovan imitating Dylan; but i should point out that after knowing only the Donovan's greatest hits album- knowing it intimately- i finally heard the original version of catch the wind, and it quickly popped into my head "he's trying to sound like Bob Dylan".
this when i was about 11-12, having never read or heard anything about that comparison. already familiar with Phil Ochs and Gordon Lightfoot and other singer-guitarists and never thinking that about anyone else.
'doesn't mean he was, "consciously", as i stated earlier; but where did that come from?
no imagined similarity.

(going to the Solid Sounds Festival in North Adams, Mass tonight. Unfortunately, it's an outdoor festival for the most part, and the forecast for tomorrow and Saturday is for rain/thunderstorms, we'll see how it goes...)

Somehow I'm still not tired of Mellow Yellow. Something about a marching bass and a girl called Saffron delights me.

(garden is left over from my daughter's COViD retreat from Manhattan to our home, she was the gardener. Figure I'll give it a try now that she's back in the Big Apple).
