Dylan's first album was mainly covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Early Dylan is great, and maybe Another Side is the early jumping off point, but I'd say with some conviction that of all the "new Dylans" anointed during the 60s, Donovan had a very solid claim to originality.
Avatar 3:24pm
Erica:

Donovan's music after 1965 got more original and eclectic for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
coelacanth∅:

from wikipedia: "Cash Box described it [catch the wind] as a "medium-paced, folk-styled low-down bluesey romancer," with a Bob Dylan-like vocal.[2]"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
coelacanth∅:

in any case the likeness to Dylan on a few of Donovan's early tracks is why i always liked his slightly later stuff better, including the cheesy remake of catch the wind!
i could never shake the idea that he wasn't being fully himself.
...only referring to the earliest recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Funky16Corners:

I don't want to belabor the point, but in 1965 the music press - as it was - was mainly a legacy unit unprepared to deal with the new music and youth culture. To those people, every guy with an acoustic guitar looked and sounded like Bob Dylan. I'm not saying it wasn't an easy mistake to make, but I think in retrospect it doesn't hold up. One of the reasons it seems at all inauthentic is that he transformed fairly rapidly into something else entirely, as witnessed by the track that's playing now. But that, as well, is something that could be said of many of Donovan and Dylan's contemporaries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Funky16Corners:

It also has something to do with how he was being sold by his record company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm
coelacanth∅:

all that's true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
doctorjazz:

Donavan, like anyone who played an acoustic guitar and harmonica automatically was a "Next Dylan". But from the start he was more light, whimsical, and sang "better" (that is, more conventionally better) than Dylan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
adamdoesit:

For that matter, that he transformed fairly rapidly into something else entirely could be said of Dylan, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
doctorjazz:

And Dylan got hell for it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Funky16Corners:

Donovan also diverges from Dylan in that he was pretty much guileless. Dylan was Bowie-esque in that he was perpetually wrapped in a persona.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Funky16Corners:

@Doc - The folks that gave Dylan hell were (rightly) left in the dust.

The imagined Dylan connection did undermine him initially over here. He still hit the charts. Was it Micky Most producing?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm
Funky16Corners:

@Brian - Which zine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
coelacanth∅:

i don't need to belabor it or be agreed with, but should've said this before...
i completely agree with these points made against the idea of Donovan imitating Dylan; but i should point out that after knowing only the Donovan's greatest hits album- knowing it intimately- i finally heard the original version of catch the wind, and it quickly popped into my head "he's trying to sound like Bob Dylan".
this when i was about 11-12, having never read or heard anything about that comparison. already familiar with Phil Ochs and Gordon Lightfoot and other singer-guitarists and never thinking that about anyone else.
'doesn't mean he was, "consciously", as i stated earlier; but where did that come from?
no imagined similarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm

  3:54pm
Andres:

A butter promotional campaign (back in the days when big margarine was eating their market share) almost ruined this song for me. Almost.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Funky16Corners:

@C - I didn't mean to infer that you had imagined the connection. It's interesting, apparently the original recording of Catch the Wind (the one I played) was redone for his first album and they added harmonica, which suggests to me that someone wanted people to make the connection between Dono and Dylan.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm

To belabor a point already belabored (as I am wont to do), while Donovan was one of many folk singers marketed as "The New Dylan", nobody took him quite as seriously or really thought of him as the return of the Messiah, as they did of Dylan (and, consequently, nobody was too upset with Epistle to Dippy or Mellow Yellow, while Dylan was a deserter when he went Rock n' Roll).

Donovan was still only twenty three when this was recorded.

My perception of Donovan's Atlantis was warped and added enjoyment after seeing the Futurama episode.

@Brian - I often marvel at the ages of some of the 60s great musicians when they were at their peak.

@WR - I almost recorded the Futurama version!

Like many, I will forever envision Billy Batts getting stomped to death when I hear this song. Is this a sort of memorial to Ray Liotta?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Funky16Corners:

Oh wait, was it in Goodfellas? My bad! RIP Ray...

Erica:

Look up the soundtrack to Atlantis the Lost Empire Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Funky16Corners:

I'm pretty sure Gainsbourg heard this before he recorded Melody Nelson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm
Funky16Corners:

@David - You're right, Goodfellas! For some reason I associated with the savage beating of Joe Pesci in Casino. Similar scene, different song.

Larry if memory serves the cover to HMS Donovan was painted by Patrick who did the Humblebums covers. A Scottish connection?

@Brian - I'm not sure. I should look that up!

I heard Donovan raised Brian Jones' son Julian, but not his own actor kids Donovan Leitch and Ione Skye.

Hearing Donovan's music is always enjoyable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Funky16Corners:

@David - I think Dono Jr and Ione were raised in the US by their Mom. Donovan married Brian's ex and raised his son as his own.
