that last scene with rutger hauer and harrison ford was pretty damn fine.

Unstoppable because of his colossal electricity bills.

R.I.P. Vangelis. 🗡 🏃‍♀️

@string oh my yes, I mean just look at the number of synths on that rack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
StringOFperils:

He must've had to crawl under the piano to get in there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
spodiodi:

hello, hello, Devon and Company. here for the good stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm
ironybread:

Was Vangelis an impossible, tempermental artist? Is that why there was no "Blade Runner" soundtrack for ten years after the release of the film? Or is the story much, much more complicated? Wrong answers only.

Will:

Vangelis: The Man Who Made Music. Doc coming soon.

Listener Robert:

Aw, horseys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
dale:

warner brothers owned it and probably didn't see any money to be made from it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
ironybread:

@dale After what happened to the "Shining" soundtrack, I would not doubt this theory one bit
  8:12pm
Jackie G:

Hope we hear some Jon Anderson stuff
  8:13pm
P-90:

No one has called Vangelis “temperamental” or difficult to work with. But he picked his projects very carefully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
DanFA:

Hello Devon. Great show.

While walking along in desert sand, you suddenly look down and see a tortoise crawling toward you. You reach down and flip it over onto its back. The tortoise lies there, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs, trying to turn itself over, but it cannot do so without your help. You are not helping. Why?
A)Because I have to hear these 300 Vangelis albums.
B)Because Morricone Island's on now
C)Because I'm going to rip your head off, meatbag.

@Stringofperils, what's this gotta do with my mother?

JetBoy of Brooklyn:

I’m gonna go with C
  8:16pm
P-90:

and if it took a few years for the Blade Runner soundtrack to come out, it’s almost certainly because the studio didn’t think it was worth it, nothing to do with Vangelis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm
ironybread:

@StringOfPerils They're just questions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm
ultradamno:

Though that's a little weird, since Chariots Of Fire had JUST happened, which would the high visibility point for Vangelis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
ironybread:

I certainly would hope that my initial impression of Vangelis was correct, that he was concerned above all about the quality of the product put out under his name; however the 1994 Warners CD of "Blade Runner" included a liner note by Vangelis saying "Finding myself unable to release these recordings at the time, it is with great pleasure that I am able to do so now", which raised a tiny red flag with me...did he have a beef with the studio? Or were there other extenuating circumstances?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
StringOFperils:

Probably some sort of international publishing rights/marketing complications. Who gets what share of what when and how and for how long.
Avatar 8:22pm
Marshall Stacks:

Memory is hazy, oh so hazy, but I believe I saw Vangelis perform in *Jersey City* as the keyboardist for Yes in, dunno, 1976?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
dale:

they couldn't afford a real graphic designer for this last album.
  8:24pm
Jackie G:

That may have been Patrick Moraz at Jersey City. He replaced Wakeman as keyboardst on one album.
  8:24pm
P-90:

The inside story is that Vangelis actually did accept the offer to join Yes, provisionally in the basis that he would have a chance to play with the band and see if he was comfortable playing Wakeman’s parts on songs in the repertoire (as well as participating in writing new material.) They tried it, he just couldn’t deal with the thought of touring and having to replicate Wakeman’s style night after night. So Vangelis and Yes moved on, quite amicably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
StringOFperils:

They blew the graphic design budget on the Letraset for his last name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
dale:

string - ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm
dale:

they had to buy another sheet for the consonants...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
ironybread:

@String Hey man, it's simply a fact that every circumflex E, hachek A, or umlaut you put on an album automatically adds 30 cents to the replication costs
  8:30pm
P-90:

Once Vangelis signed the contract and did the BR soundtrack it was the studio’s to release. They were down in the movie and didn’t want to spend the money for a soundtrack album of nom-pop music. That’s what Vangelis was referring to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm
ultradamno:

But tildes are free!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
ironybread:

@P-90 Warner Bros. certainly didn't have any love to spare for the Ladd Company or any of their product in 1982, despite the fact that Ladd brought "Chariots of Fire" and its attendant Oscar nomination into the Warners stable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
ironybread:

And bless Laddie for greenlighting the likes of Blade Runner and Twice Upon a Time and Star 80
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm

And now I have to stop commenting for a few minutes so I can cry over this "Cosmos" theme.

Good Evening, Devon & Castaways!

Well, this one seemed quite in the mail. For the past few mpnths, I'd been going through his many soundtracks and solo projects. An amazingly vast body of work, only equal to the likes of Andrzej Korzynski and Jean-Michel Jarre, which will endure for future generations to enjoy and be fascinated by. RIP "Papa".

It wasn’t about the Ladd Company, it was just about a movie they were pessimistic about, it cost a lot of money and didn’t look like it could be very successful in theaters ( which it was not.)
