A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I bought the "666" album after hearing the song "Altamont" on KROQ, early '80s, probably between like Blondie and Adam and the Ants or something. For that you can thank DJ Freddie Snakeskin, who had been at the same pirate station in Arizona from whence came Don Bolles. Must have baffled the Valley girls. I didn't actually watch it, but Good Morning America teased a Sex Pistols segment this morning to promote that show. It just struck me as odd...it probably shouldn't but...if there's a Throbbing Gristle/COUM Transmissions show on cable next year though, that could break me.

Fun fact: Star Wars nearly had a Tomita/Vangelis/Wendy Carlos style soundtrack until inspiration struck George Lucas to have a bombastic throwback to serial type films.
Wouldn't that have been weird?

I’d have preferred a THX-level weird score there. I kind of hate John Williams
Avatar 9:07pm
Domenic:

This track from Albedo 0.39 is very nice... I discovered "Switched on Bach' early on, borrowing an LP from the library..Vangelis knew how to work that medium..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
Rich in Washington:

funny, though. Jodowrowski's Dune and Star Wars were in production around the same time but there's no overlap with people, artists, etc.
And I wonder if Lucas was familiar with Metal Hurlant, etc. Never heard it mentioned but the aesthetic of those comics are very distinct and similar.

I don't like John Williams either, but then I find Star Wars pretty dreadful...it's like Sid and Marty Kroft go to outer space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

I know what you mean, dano59. Really corny. I loved it as a kid, though. It actually got me interested in classic and symphonic music.
Avatar 9:09pm
Mr Fab:

An electronic score wouldn't have made much sense (tho I'm sure I would have liked it) since "Star Wars" wasn't futuristic, it was set "a long time ago..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm

Everybody points at Marvel movies as the symptom of the manchildishness of the culture, but Star Wars is even more pervasive and more oblivious to being exactly that.

i know lots of people point to Star Wars as the beginning of the sharp decline of American cinema.

I do like that it result in the Arrested Development line "here, go see a star war" for Jessica Walter to deliver.

Successful composers like John Williams have to be good at "stealing" from others. they don't have much time...... when Star Wars came out. the LP referenced Holst "the planets" and Wagner.. so as a kid had no idea... and went looking for the source material

I think Flash played the whole thing, a whole side at least, therein lies plenty of weird

Star Wars' box-office take changed Hollywood. Just prior to that, there was Fat City, and They Shoot Horses Don't They?, and The Last Detail....it was like intelliigence got nuked

Didn't get to meet him, but I SAW Jon Anderson at the station. Another host had him on to interview on the eve of a show in town and he was totally gracious and unphased by being in a dinky fleabitten community radio station. He looked like a Hobbit.

I was listening to Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream around the time Episode 4 came out, so I woulda loved it. Eventually Williams got a good gig for his talents with the Boston Pops and if only he’d foregone film work.

I remember reading an article from a movie trade magazine from when Star Wars was in production and it was causing a buzz in the industry, partly because it was verging on being a troubled production and very high budget and Lucas kept referring to it as a children's film, almost dismissively.
I think the article was making the rounds when the prequels were coming out.

I always thought it amusing to see how Sony's hardware and software divisions went to war with each other when they bought Columbia/CBS records. Software was terrified of piracy while hardware wanted user-friendly tech. Then they got the tax on DAT, so they ended up levying and paying themselves a tax.
