Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Good evening, theater-lovers! Am I here, or am I going out to get dinner? Time will tell.

Good afternoon from the West! this takes me back to my college days in San Francisco when there was not only Miss M but a station that played music from the 20s, 30s, and 40s that I had on all the time.

Wonder if we will be hearing any Al Bowlly or Glenn Miller or other WWII casualties?
Avatar 🎭 7:34pm
Listener Gregory:

That Noel Coward is something. Interestingly, in the end, the British were not so beastly to the Germans after the war, in contrast to the previous Great Unpleasantness. Perhaps the reason was the devastation of Germany per se, which largely escaped destruction (except for its soldiers) in WWI.

I'm reading a British mystery written and taking place during WWII, and I was taken aback to hear two characters reporting that they were listening to Richard Strauss and Wagner on the wireless. I guess all things German were not suppressed even then.

@Gregory: My #1 favorite song to sing and the only song I ever use when I (rarely) audition for stuff is by Richard Strauss, he wrote it when he was 21. I was pretty distressed to learn of his Nazi connections...

Listener Gregory, I recently read a mystery written around 1949, that took place during a production of a Wagner opera in England, fictionally the first after the war.

Strauss' Electra...yikes.

You should perform "Zueignung" at the H&M, but deliver it legit.

You mean the Nazi connection? Or the acquired taste of German lieder? I can't imagine WFMU folks *not* being tantalized by a recital. Strauss, Schubert, Wolf, Beethoven...what's not to like?

That's an approach. I should add that I also especially love it when mere non-celebrity amateurs--in the etymological sense of the word--perform. The drive to sing, act, play musical instruments, and all that, is itself a wonder to behold.

This is a great show, Bronwyn. Vera Lynn died in 2020 and it was HUGE in the UK. When I looked up the year I learned that the film version of The Wall opens with a bit of Vera singing "The Little Boy Santa Claus Forgot", a boy without a father, same as Roger Waters.
