Favoriting May 1, 2022: A Flute-Full Endeavor
An appreciation of the great flautist James Newton on his 69th birthday: from his solo recordings to his many collaborations, including with Anthony Davis, Abdul Wadud, David Murray, Arthur Blythe, John Carter, Chet Baker, and Chico Freeman. Leave a flute pun or three on the comments page. Oh, and hear the story of the garbage-hoarding crane-occupier of Münster.

Rabbit, we have so many similar words that once you learn a few you can figure out others. Every time I read something in German I learn a little of it. So now I know, for instance, Baukran must be "build-crane" in the sense of "crane for building". So now I'm trying to figure out the "stellen" part of Baustellenkran.
Avatar 🥁 12:45pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cognates, sure. I love the sound of it.

Baustellenkran is a little bit redundant. It just means a construction site crane. It's a crane.

slightly paraphrased from Gaetano Benedetti: 'the alienated Self, no longer having an unconscious image of its own identity, looks about in the surrounding world not only for a symbol but a substitute for an absence … without this hallucinatory substitute, the patient could not perceive himself … hence his resistance to abandoning it.'

I just realized, now we pretty much know where Stork lives. Just need the floor and apt #.
  12:50pm
Listener Robert:

Similarly, I gather "Ein psychisch kranker Man" is "a psychologically sick man". Now I have to figure out "psychisch belastend". The "be-" part is used similarly in some English words to indicate perfect passive participle, i.e. something undergone. "Psychically lost"? Guessing on sound that "lastend" could be related to "lost".

Thanks, Stork. I'm guessing (no fun looking these things up) that "last" in German is some transitive verb root. Maybe it's related to English "last" in the sense of "remaining from".

So you're "belastend" as in having had that done to you, and this is how you've been left at the end.
Avatar 12:58pm

Robert - the verb "lasten" means to burden. he "be" prefix is participial - meaning "to be" - it's complicated, until it's easy.

  1:05pm
Listener Robert:

Looks like by Wiktionary for English I was partly right, but only for Etymology 2, "last" in the sense of the obsolete meaning "perform" and the current meanings "endure". So we could construct an "Anglish" word, "belasted" (on the "be-" model of bejeweled, becalmed, beclowned) to mean "left this way from having endured". Which is about synonymous to the German word in question then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm

Maybe the crane is the only place where no one will get in the way of Wordle. "Ahhh, privacy at last!"
Avatar 1:34pm
Stork:

I just checked again - he sits there with his right leg crossed over his left most of the time. You can see his right foot dangling. He almost never moves at all. Except to go boom-walking. He must be getting hungry or dehydrated - the cops are really worried that he'll fall when he finally decides to come down.
Avatar 1:36pm
Stork:

SoP - you know, I usually play the German Wordle and skip the English. The German version is actually easier. So much less idiosyncracy n German spelling - but they use more obscure words than the English version, so it's kinda challenging.

…a fateful day, when the Glen Passaic did flow
A man who was sane went out on a crane
With a hoard of garbage to go
And did he ever come down, no he never came down
It's the cause of his renown
He will swing forever o'er the flats of Münster
He's the man who never came down

A former friend used to climb cranes when drunk. Never fell, though he did once from the third floor into a shop, unscathed. I wrote "former" because he went populist left, hates foreigners, and we're no longer on speaking terms because of that (I lost most of my childhood friends this way)

Folding Balalaika: 2oz Glen Passaic, 2oz Stolichnaya 100-proof, 1 cup hot, strong black tea, 2tsp sugar, 1tsp blackberry jam. Stir ingredients together til fully dissolved. Serve piping hot, in a teacup wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a napkin.

What paltry little I know about the recent election in France is that the choice was between a populist right and a populist left that shared many of the same racist dispositions. That comports with what you've been saying recently. Some people are saying that "Marine" - gag me - has in a sense won. And she's getting closer and closer ....

@RevRab: Yep, in June. A schedule change made by a guy who thought that would consolidate his power and didn't make it to the runoff round. Another of his bright plans was hiring the far right security goons as a special police unit, as if the cops weren't racist enough. And that's our "left"

I only vaguely know who my representative is (a longtime rightwinger who at least isn't as far-right as the previous one). I'm in a right-wing district, so I'll vote left to no account in the first round, and again for the lesser evil in the runoff.
