Heard just the last portion of a radio piece on Mingus yesterday, in which he described a childhood utterly without parental love, attention or guidance. Quite sad. Striking and amazing that, sometimes, among the things the brain does when traumatized and emotionally neglected...is NOT cancel or bury unique creative energies and possibilities.

There was a ton of Phil Schaap rebroadcasts embedded in WKCR's Bach Fest back during Xmas. If you ask me (didn't someone ask me?!) I think it's a terrible programming decision. Hearing Phil warble from the grave is not a good look.
Speaking of good looks, it's Ramblin' Ray!!

Mingus never asked us to be pals. I think if we ever get too close to our musical heroes, we will often be disappointed.

Doug Schulkind:
That is a kind and humane way to frame the situation at WKCR. It hadn't considered their over-reliance on playing old Phil Schaap archives was really more a way to fill airtime during a lockdown than a way to keep a resurrected Schaap in constant public view.

And they're always pitching for money, sometimes they used to plead that they were really broke-Columbia set them free (I believe Schapp had to do with that), for good and bad.
Doug Schulkind:
I'm guessing WKCR is sitting on decades of Schaap archives.

Haden is an interesting bassist-I don't think he'd claim his technique is up there with the best (like McBride, Scott LaFaro), but, on the other hand, he created a style of "free" bass playing, and his soul always jumped out of his music.
