A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

Rich in Washington:

I find streaming service crime series really irritating. They're highly dubious and also everything's in the service of stretching a story which could be told in the space of a conventional documentary over several episodes.
But never let the truth get in the way of a good screenplay or a million dollar deal.

That gets into post-EST Rheinhart. Which gave us all a good Fall song.

It's weird how the internet and social media has gone from giving people tools for critical thinking and reason (and - GASP - empathy) to turning people into a bunch of superstitious fools easily led around by nutjobs with megaphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
ultradamno:

The Catching Killers series at least mostly keeps it to one killer per episode (or two at most), plus all the detectives always seem so sad.

Zipperhead7:

Speaking of creepy-crawlies -- the Deep Purple track we heard on here a couple of weeks ago ripped off "Bombay Calling" by It's a Beautiful Day - which was written by Bobby Beausoleil when he was in the Orkustra. www.youtube.com...

@Rich in Washington
So, I'm young enough that if my parents didn't hide 9/11 it would have been the defining crime in my life... but I don't remember it because they did... so instead Columbine... which I was not old enough to remember but constantly was brought up is that I think.... and the false narrative peddling in service to stories there is mind blowing
  9:40pm
MHLee:

@Zipperhead7 Oh, so you heard Sweet Child in Time... wonderful ripoff though

I did like their Wuornos one, if only putting a pin in the feminist revisionism of movies like Monster and showing for the bottom feeding grifter with no impulse control she actually was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm

Wournos, the film by Nick Bromfield?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm

No, I was talking about the Catching Killers episode about her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
Rich in Washington:

I'm watching these weird YouTube interview series called Soft White Underbelly and their weirdly engaging. Kinda hard to stop watching even though the subject matter can be somewhat repellent or off-putting.
Kicks, they keep getting harder to find...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

I'm old enough that Watergate is probably the defining crime of my life...my great grandmother's caretaker complaining they pre-empted the soaps for the hearings.

I don't consume very much true crime.... though Disgraceland on Amazon music is really good

That's funny, ultra! I used to spend summers at my grandparents and I remember them having the hearings on all day. I think my grandfather wanted me (4 years old or so) to watch it with him.

I remember Helter Skelter being one of those TV movies where I was bummed because my parents forbid me from watching it and all the kids were talking about it at school the following days.

I just had my ancient copy of Third Reich and Roll out today to sample something from it.

@Rich in Washington I've seen that movie, and honestly liked it. Manson's birthplace is 2 towns over... I believe the house still stands and everything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

I still haven't seen that, Aitch. Should I?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm

Reich is great..but there's something about the nexus of Not Available, Fingerprince, Vileness Fats and even Duck Stab that is the apex for me.

that's really peak Residents, right there.

(I don't say "even" Duck Stab like it's less so much as the some of the more "songs" on Fingerprince seems to point to it)

Duckstab is the fan favorite so it's embarrassing to praise

Duck Stab and Commercial album my go-tos, but all that era mind bending

40 1 minute songs, just a verse and a chorus. The listener was supposed to tape each track 3 times for the perfect 3 minute pop song, and you got 40 of them. Hence the name according to Homer Flynn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

Commercial Album is one that grows in estimation almost every time I hear or think about it....I think there's a lot of Yasuaki Shimizu's commercial scores influence in it too.

It's funny. As long as I can recall, the Residents/Ralph would sell you anything from their studio. I remember them auctioning off stuff in their mail order catalogs all the time - instruments, uncut slicks from LP covers, etc. It was pretty cool.
  10:15pm

Oh yeah look at that... I'm never thought of supporting them on bandcamp... I bought them on amazon... I guess they always hit me as too big for bandcamp
