It's a very depressing part of development these days that river interaction is always limited to "viewing." The new high rises along the waterfront in NYC all have river walks -- 10-15' above high tide. There's no interaction with the river, no public access, no education about the river as a living system. It's another commodity of capital's playground -- a view, a perk, a benefit to be appreciated from a distance as a mark of privilege.

Build public access. Build boat sheds. Build installations that introduce the public to their rivers. The rivers DO NOT belong to developers or industry or capital. They belong to no one -- which means their preservation (and the search for justice for them and for us) belongs to all of us.

Sweet fancy moses, developers. We hates them we do.

@Handy: while I agree to a point on your river observation, I would add that if we didn't live is such a litiguos society, access might be better. Someone gets hurt or drowns, even if they are doing something stupid & they sue the city. Whether or not they win, the legal action costs the taxpayers millions of dollars per year. Just this week, a guy fell off the famous Hawks Nest on Rt. 97 near Port Jervis. He was trying to retrieve a drone he crashed. Apparently he didn't realize the double drop off & fell to his death. I'll bet the lawyers are suing the state as we speak. Every year several people drown rafting & canoeing the Delaware River here. Most are from out of the area & not wearing life jackets as required. And the lawsuits come flying fast & furious against all involved.
