When Station Manager Ken was playing various versions of Plastic Bertrand's 'Ca Plane Pour Moi' yesterday, the Sonic Youth version was actually not that far from the original....except when Lee Ranaldo opened up and all six-string Hell broke loose. It's weird to think of him being under-rated, but I can't think of anyone who has pushed the guitar further into new territory over the past few decades than he has (whether you like SY or not). Massive tip o' the hat to Mr Lee.

Watched a stand-up bass player a few times recently and never fail -- feeling like a musical rube -- to be impressed by the simple practiced familiarity that gets to the accuracy with NOOOO frets.

If there are many guitarists here, you could play like the wide line of young guitarists who played "folk" Catholic masses at the front of the church when I was in elementary school. Chording their youthful hearts out.

I try to play acoustic 6-string guitar, based on singing songs rather than much soloing. Played electric bass guitar in bands. Open mikes mosytly where it's usually two songs or 10 minutes tops. Sometimes 8 or 9 min.

Thot violin would be enuff like gittar to glve me an In. Rather - their contrasts are as prominent I feel... As Gittarist - one hopes for as much finger span as possible. Violin is so tiny - it is instead more like Typing: Lock yer hand in place & land them fingers *exactly* in the right spot. Stand Up Bass may differ - I haven't tried it ! Also - violin tuned *opposite* to gittar: GDAE... Where Bass is EADG like gittar too...

RevRab: Yeah, my paws are too big for the fiddle, but the bass suits me fine. The notes are pretty far apart at the bottom, but as you go up the neck they get closer. You can actually tune it either in 5ths (classical) or 4ths (jazz/blues/rock). One time I asked my teacher if I should try tuning in 5ths, he said "Yeah you can try that if you want, but then you'll have to find a new teacher.". R. Fripp's "New Standard Tuning" is in 5ths, I believe.

Same thing recently with Godfather script -- just checking a thing, and then reading large sections. Brian in UK: I saw a 6-piece berimbau ensemble (!) last week, one of the pieces they played was called "Kora" (no actual koras were involved). The group is called Arcomusical, they are fantastic. Not a plug, I have no connection to the band, I just think they are great.

My friends and I have an NFL pool every year, and I "run" it to the extent it requires any running. But I come up with a theme every year and tailor the weekly e-mails around it. This year, The Godfather.

(Previous years: Withnail and I, The Big Lebowski, Calvin and Hobbes, Community, The Simpsons (twice), Bloom County, D&D).

Ahhhh, no! It always reaches the terminal too soon. Great show, David! Really wonderful. Djibouti selections were fantastic.
