Boy: "Dad, why do they do packs of one condom?"
Dad: "Those are for the high schoolers for Friday nights."
Boy: "So, why do they make packs of three?"
Dad: "For the college guys for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights."
Boy: "Then why do they make packs of 12?"
Dad: "Those are for married couples -- you know, January, February, March."

Holy shit!
I am sorry you were treated so poorly for so long. I’m really glad you found a place like this where you can be loved and appreciated even beyond whatever love and appreciation you have in the real world. Thank you once again for another joke this morning. I already passed it on to my stepdad.
I’m currently listening to the book “the 90s” by Chuck Klosterman. He was just drawing a distinction between people in the 90s rejecting consumerism and people of the right now, specifically those 29 to 19 rejecting capitalism. From his Gen X stance, he seems to believe that rejecting consumerism is much more productive, but your story among so many, many others, is why I stand with generation Z rejecting capitalism.
Full disclosure, at 42 I’m either the last of the Gen Xers or the first of the Millennials as I was born in 1980.
Apparently 1980 to 1982 is some sort of artificial, generational DMZ.

He filled in on a bill that K8 and her last band were on, like ten years ago now. Basically just him and the sound guy, Owen, at Trash Bar in Brooklyn. I was bouncing off the sky with excitement, and it ended being a "Well, what would you like to hear, [Handy]?" kind of set.
And afterward I got to tell him how powerfully formative his music had been for me, how I felt it influenced who I am, musically but also ethically and aesthetically, and how I kept that with me no matter how far I was from where I grew up and found his music. Meant a TON to me to get to tell him that. And I don't know, maybe musicians hear that kind of thing all the time. He was graciousness itself, of course. And then later his partner came up to me and told me how much it meant to him to hear it.
A good night.

Been ruminating a lot lately on how the commodification of all of our interpersonal relationships is directly a consequence of the merciless grinder of ever-churning capitalism. To me almost all of our anxiety, precarity, disillusionment, sicknesses, alienation, etc can be traced to the nexus of capitalism and consumerism.
Matt Christman, as ever, gives another brilliant dissertation on this. youtu.be...
Thanks for mentioning that Klosterman book. Just saw it at my local bookstore and put it on my list to take out at the library. But not before I completely read Graeber’s “Bullshit Jobs.”
This Neoliberal nightmare has to end soon.
