Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

Not so much a doc as being a fly on the wall (of a bus) while the whole label's roster goes on tour. Some crazy cross performances. You can also tell where they seem to have blundered onto a mountain of cocaine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm

My big problem with music docs is similar-there's usually too little music in them. They'll show the musician/band playing somewhere, then as you get into it, they cut to someone's opinion (interesting, or not so much), talking instead of letting the music being played end. Just drives me crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm
Gary:

RW! Mom, I unfortunately, that's one of the few I'm playing tonight where I don't have a date for the original recording, but definitely 70s

The BBC/WGBH ten-part "Rock & Roll" documentary was one of the best docs on popular music I've seen. It's never been released on DVD; getting the rights probably would have been a nightmare. You can see snatches of it on YouTube. The episode on funk is fantastic -- I used to show it in classes just for the hell of it

That said, I often do enjoy music documentaries that go below the surface of the subject. If it's about an album or group that I already know well, I don't need to see footage of the music I already am familiar with.
Not to totally contradict myself, of course. The problem is when the film has amazing new footage and doesn't just show it.

In the DVD era - just give me everything !...
Music docs have meant a lot to me. I think a lot about Soundbreaking - as giving a pretty good overview of what's happening in Recording History & to where we're @ now...
I listen to a few Beatle-themed podcasts & I'm good with that... Howard Goodall's expositions of TheBeatles from a technical musical / 'Classical' perspective have come in for some abuse by Beatlegeeks - but since I'm steeped in Beatles but painfully uneducated in Music Technically - I find them useful...

I'm up for something like a weekly Soundbreaking if it's teach Technical Musicality - theory & recording - any & all of it. But I guess that stuff is all over the interwebz in diverse forms... It'd be nice to have a combination of actual accessible & enjoyable Musics with the Lessons / Illustrations (a balance Schaap's lectures didn't really have tho I love him)...
