The Brians: I kept reading in Victorian British novels comments about the unbelievable spiciness of Italian food. This was finally explained when one of the books put in a footnote "refers to the presence of garlic." Yes, to the Victorian mind, garlic made the food completely inedible.

I'm currently watching the gorgeous adaptation of Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend. The music is mostly a melange of syrupy "classical" and '50s and '60s Italian pop. The show is marvelous. Two young teenagers are the leads. Neither had been an actor before working on the series. Shockingly wonderful performances from both women.

You can make pesto from many different leafy greens. When we lived in Brooklyn, wild mint grew like kudzu in our backyard. We made mint pesto all the time. Yum-my!

Long tracks like this are truer to the actual performance context of the music. When performed live, these grooves easily last an hour. Chopping things down to five-minute nuggets to fit on albums is an abomination.
