Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 18, 2022 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@doctorjazz: although you didn't ask me... I'm super happy with a Holo May as DAC.

Avatar 2:10pm
Jeff Moore:

But for playing the silver discs... have you checked out the Cambridge CXC transport to feed the DAC of your choice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff (I thought you might not be able to resist chiming in). Dean bought the Technics SLG-700 not too long ago, and was very happy with it the last I heard.
I'm due for a major system overhaul-using a decaying Oppo low level DVD player for disc spinning, need something to spin the discs. Have another friend using a Bricasti M1-it's a bit of a stretch, but I heard it at his house, man...(on the other hand, the rest of his system is commensurate to the DAC).
I've heard about the Cambridge, though I'm a bit hesitant to get something that doesn't play SACD (not that I have a ton of those).
And network digital transport just has me totally befuddled; making due with an old Logitech Squeezebox Touch for streaming the Drummer Stream.

  2:23pm
Dean:

You are correct, doctorjazz. I'm still very happy with it, even though it had been many years since I'd used a standalone player. I was a transport/DAC guy from the mid-'90s. The Technics remains impressive. But I gotta say the latest turntable upgrade shamelessly blows CD and SACD out of the water.
Avatar 2:23pm
Stork:

It's probably a good thing that no one can see me weep openly at this masterpiece cover. I always snivel and snort and nose-drool a lot. You don't need to see/hear that.

Jeff Moore:

@doctorjazz: Not wishing ill on your beloved Squeezebox, but if it should go casters-up (I've heard that some are gradually hitting end of life) note that the Rendu devices can be put in a Squeezebox protocol mode so your existing server can send to one of those without having to re-invent your whole software deal. BUT, they don't have displays.

Fairport Convention should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were a big part of the rock and roll underground of the late 60s/early70s and a big influence on several contemporary folk and alternative acts.

Dean, I had my LP12 brought up to spec about 4-5 years ago, with the new Lingo (the old one died on me), but I'm sure they have added more upgrades since (I'm afraid to check).

Philadelphia is the home of both the Mummer Museum and the Mutter Museum, and I've always wondered how many people confusedly visit one expecting the other.

The Mutter Museum is the most insane museum I've ever seen -- they used to put out a calendar featuring some of their holdings

Dean:

They have. Beyond the Lingo there's a differently named power supply, and just weeks after I ordered the then top-of-the-line Kandid they introduced a new flagship cartridge. Both options were inadvisable for me in terms of outlay. But the Kandid et al. are spectacular.

@Dean et al: some dedicated Linnies there, you even have one of their Kartridges!

The LP12 is one of those amazing examples of continual refinement, like the Porsche 911 series.

It is amazing, I have my LP12 since the early 80's (but with upgrades, not that much of it was in the original unit).

You can win this amazing Veloso/Gil at the end of the show by pledging $20 or more!

@doctorjazz: In re Sonore: I believe that the safest choice is an ultraRendu. Excellent sound, standard copper ethernet interface, and the opticalRendu is IMO out because it has in my experience been the only one of that series prone to occasional unreliability (because maybe soem internal power budget is skating close to the edge)

This NRBQ 5CD box set is today's GRAND PRIZE. Pledges of $75 or more are in the running!

The price tag on a brand new fully loaded LP12 is bananas. I can only afford it because I've made incremental upgrades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm
doctorjazz:

Same here, Dean (though you can still buy a base model LP12, upgrade over time if you like).
I'm not at the fully loaded-had gone for the now discontinued Ittok arm back in the day, and a Lyra Delos cartridge when I did my las LP12 upgrade about 5 years ago.
