Our sweetie has been on thyroid meds for a couple of years. The problem, it seems, is the meds can take a toll on the kidneys.

@Doug, the alternative seems to be a dose of radioactive iodine. 99.9% effective, if expensive, but requires some days' offsite confinement, presumably until kitty stops peeing rems. Idk if I want to be without her that long.

My sadness is reserved largely for my sweet daughter who will be devastated. Her first real big loss. (If you don't count the three grandparents who kicked the bucket in rapid succession a few years back.) Actually, this loss is (will be) bigger.

A current thing in multi-directional matters of losses and animals: After thinking occasionally about a cat for her home, when she's never had one, my girlfriend's thinking on it accelerated almost impulsively a few weeks ago and a small, fluffy, pear-shaped, 8 year old cat was adopted. Five days later, girlfriend's mum died. The "hey, scratch and pet me," cat has been a VERY important extra comfort/contact/chat/attention buddy in grieving period (made harder by international travel restrictions that deferred any timely visit to join family and attend services), and girlfriend believes fluffball arrival time, which seemed so random, was no accident.

I've been telling people that our dog, acquired before COVID, has kept us alive during the pandemic, by making sure we go outside at least a few times a day. There's a decent chance I would've otherwise spent 2020 curled up in the fetal position 24/7.
